The Central Bank of Myanmar (; ; abbreviated CBM) is the central bank of Myanmar (formerly Burma). Organisation Its headquarter is located in Nay Pyi Taw, and has branches in Yangon and Mandalay. History The Central Bank of Myanmar was founded as the Union Bank of Burma on 3 April 1948 by the Union Bank of Burma Act, 1947 and took over the functions of the Rangoon branches of the Reserve Bank of India. The Union Bank of Burma was opened at the corner of Merchant Road and Sule Pagoda Road and had the sole right to issue currency for the country. In 2013, the Central Bank of Myanmar became an autonomous and independent regulatory body by the Central Bank of Myanmar Law, which was enacted by the Myanmar parliament. In 2019, the Central Bank began working on a national standard QR payment system. Dubbed MyanmarPay (MMQR), the standard was launched in February 2025. Than Nyein (military Officer)
Than Nyein (; 5 August 1937 – 21 May 2014) was a Burmese politician and physician. He was one of the founders of the National Democratic Force (NDF) party, after working for the National League for Democracy (NLD) since its inception in 1988. Early life and career Than Nyein was born in Khanaung east village, Kyauktan Township in British Burma on 5 August 1937. He graduated from Institute of Medicine, Yangon in 1963 after passing high school in 1954. He worked for the Ministry of Health as a leader in the leprosy prevention group and as a township medical officer. He also served for the United Nations in Sri Lanka from 1984 to 1986. Kyi Kyi Tin-Myint, known by her pen name Kyi Aye () was a Burmese poet, novelist, and short story writer. Born in Yangon, she studied at University of Medicine and University of Yangon. She is credited as one of the most influential Burmese writers for several generations, however, her works remain largely unknown outside Burmese language. Life and career Kyi Kyi was born in British Burma's Hledan, Yangon district on 13 December 1929, the third child of U Han and Daw Ngwai Yon.
