Undertow was a straight edge hardcore punk band from Seattle, Washington, active during the early and mid-1990s. They released material on Indecision Records, Bloodlink Records, Excursion Records and Overkill Records. Indecision Records released a comprehensive discography entitled ''Everything'', which has 28 tracks spanning Undertow's entire active period with John Pettibone on vocals. RevHQ described them as 'founding fathers of Seattle straight edge'. Metalcore
Metalcore is a broadly defined fusion genre combining elements of extreme metal and hardcore punk, originating in the 1990s United States and becoming popular in the 2000s. Metalcore typically has aggressive verses and melodic choruses, combined with Breakdown (music), breakdowns – which are slow, intense passages conducive to moshing. Other defining traits are low-tuned, percussive guitar riffs, double bass drumming, and polished production. John Pettibone
John Pettibone is the former vocalist for the Seattle metalcore band Himsa. Before joining the band for the 2001 release of the ''Death Is Infinite'' EP, Pettibone was the lead vocalist for Undertow, a straight edge hardcore band which was also based in Seattle. He also sang for Nineironspitfire for a short time. Pettibone is currently the lead vocalist for The Vows. The band, made up of members from other local hardcore bands such as Champion, released an EP. ''The Vows'', in mid-2006 on Indecision Records, and the same release as a 7" on Dead and Gone Records, although not a lot has been heard of them since. In addition to his work with The Vows, Pettibone is also the vocalist in the sludge/crust influenced metal band Iamthethorn, who are signed to Goodfellow Records. Straight Edge
Straight edge (sometimes abbreviated as sXe or signified by XXX or simply X) is a subculture of hardcore punk whose adherents refrain from using alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational drugs in reaction to the punk subculture's excesses. Some adherents refrain from engaging in promiscuous or casual sex, follow a vegetarian or vegan diet and do not consume caffeine or prescription drugs. The term "straight edge" was adopted from the 1981 song " Straight Edge" by the hardcore punk band Minor Threat. The straight-edge subculture emerged amid the early-1980s hardcore punk scene. Vocal
The human voice consists of sound made by a human being using the vocal tract, including talking, singing, laughing, crying, screaming, shouting, humming or yelling.
