Un Re In Ascolto
''Un re in ascolto'' (''A King Listens'') is an opera by Luciano Berio, who also wrote the Italian language, Italian libretto. It is based on a short story from the collection ''Under the Jaguar Sun'' by Italo Calvino, but incorporates excerpts from Friedrich Einsiedel's 1778 libretto (as reworked by Friedrich Wilhelm Gotter between 1790 and 1791) for an opera based on Shakespeare's ''The Tempest''. This became ''Die Geisterinsel (Fleischmann), Die Geisterinsel'' in 1798, set to music written by Friedrich Fleischmann. In addition, W. H. Auden's ''The Sea and the Mirror, The Sea and the Mirror: A Commentary on Shakespeare's The Tempest'' was a source. Berio himself described the work as an ''azione musicale'' (musical action) rather than an opera. It falls into 19 sections grouped into two parts. Luciano Berio
Luciano Berio (24 October 1925 – 27 May 2003) was an Italian composer noted for his experimental work (in particular his 1968 composition ''Sinfonia'' and his series of virtuosic solo pieces titled '' Sequenza''), and for his pioneering work in electronic music. His early work was influenced by Igor Stravinsky and experiments with serial and electronic techniques, while his later works explore indeterminacy and the use of spoken texts as the basic material for composition. Biography Berio was born in Oneglia (now part of Imperia), on the Ligurian coast of Italy. He was taught piano by his father and grandfather, who were both organists. During World War II, he was conscripted into the army, but on his first day, he injured his hand while learning how a gun worked and spent time in a military hospital. Dennis Russell Davies (born April 16, 1944 in Toledo, Ohio) is an American conductor and pianist, He is currently the music director and chief conductor of the Brno Philharmonic. Biography Davies studied piano and conducting at the Juilliard School, where he received his doctorate. He was Music Director of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra from 1972 to 1980. In 1977 he co-founded the American Composers Orchestra with composer Francis Thorne, and he was its music director until 2002. Davies was music director of the Brooklyn Philharmonic from 1991 to 1996. In 1980, Davies moved to Stuttgart, Germany, where he was General Music Director of the Baden-Württemberg State Opera House from 1980 to 1987. Heinz Zednik
Heinz Zednik (born February 21, 1940) is an Austrian operatic buffo tenor, closely associated with the character tenor roles of Wagner such as Mime and Loge ('' Der Ring des Nibelungen'') and David (''Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg''). He is also distinguished in roles such as Valzacchi ('' Der Rosenkavalier''), Monostatos ('' The Magic Flute''), Pedrillo ('' Die Entführung aus dem Serail''), the Scribe ('' Khovanshchina''), the Captain in '' Wozzeck'', and the Director ( Luciano Berio's ''Un re in ascolto''). Theo Adam (1 August 1926 – 10 January 2019) was a German operatic bass-baritone and bass singer who had an international career in opera, concert and recital from 1949. He was a member of the Staatsoper Dresden for his entire career, and sang at the Bayreuth Festival from 1952 to 1980. Bass-baritone
A bass-baritone is a high-lying bass or low-lying "classical" baritone voice type which shares certain qualities with the true baritone voice. The term arose in the late 19th century to describe the particular type of voice required to sing three Wagnerian roles: the title role in '' Der fliegende Holländer'', Wotan/Der Wanderer in the '' Ring Cycle'' and Hans Sachs in ''Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg''.
