UNC Greensboro Spartans
The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) Spartans are the athletic teams that represent the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in Greensboro, North Carolina. All 17 UNCG sports compete in the Southern Conference (SoCon). History The intercollegiate athletics program at UNCG began in the late 1940s during the days of the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (WCUNC), with students participating in national golf tournaments in 1948 and the school hosting the national tournaments for women's golf (1954) and tennis (1965). In 1964 males students were first admitted and the intercollegiate athletic program integrated male sports. In preparation for the incporporation of male students, the school became The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1963. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG or UNC Greensboro) is a public research university in Greensboro, North Carolina. It is part of the University of North Carolina, University of North Carolina system. The UNC Greensboro Spartans baseball program is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) in Greensboro, North Carolina. Greensboro Coliseum
First Horizon Coliseum (formerly Greensboro Coliseum) is an arena in Greensboro, North Carolina. Opened in 1959 as the first building of the Greensboro Complex, the 22,000-seat arena is the home arena of the UNC Greensboro Spartans basketball team, and will serve as home arena of the Greensboro Gargoyles of the ECHL. It has a history in hosting college basketball games, having been a recurring host of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) basketball tournaments, and early-round games in the NCAA tournament. Brian Merritt Moehler (born December 31, 1971) is an American former starting pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 15 seasons. Moehler pitched for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the sixth round of the 1993 draft, and assigned to the Niagara Falls Rapids. After the 1993 season, Moehler moved on to the Jacksonville Suns, where he pitched until late 1996, when he was called up by the Tigers. The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) Spartans men's basketball team represents the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in NCAA Division I. The school's team currently competes in the Southern Conference. History The school, formerly The Women's College of The University of North Carolina, allowed male students beginning 1965-66 and started a men's basketball program the following year. The first coach was an instructor in the Physical Education program, the assistant was an administrator in the Chancellor's office, with some limited experience from the University of Kansas basketball program.
