The 1989 UAAP men's basketball tournament was the 52nd year of the men's tournament of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP)'s basketball championship. De La Salle University won their first UAAP crown at the expense of FEU Tamaraws. Rizal Memorial Coliseum
The Rizal Memorial Coliseum is an indoor arena in the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila, Philippines. It can hold up to 6,100 people. History The Rizal Memorial Coliseum within the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex was built on the former site of Manila Carnival Grounds in 1934 as a tennis stadium named "Rizal Memorial Tennis Stadium", but was later renamed “Rizal Memorial Coliseum” at an unknown time. It became a primary venue for the UAAP and the NCAA, before moving to much-larger venues such as the Araneta Coliseum. It was one of the buildings that were destroyed during the Battle of Manila (1945), Battle of Manila of World War II in 1945 and was reconstructed in 1953 for the 1954 Asian Games. Jun Limpot
Zandro P. Limpot Jr. (born December 14, 1971), also known as Jun Limpot, is a Filipino former professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association. Playing career As a De La Salle Green Archer, Limpot led his team to two UAAP basketball titles (1989 and 1990). He shares the record of being a 3-time UAAP Most Valuable Player. He then played for Magnolia Ice Cream in the PBL for four years from 1989 to 1993. He led the team to four conference championships and he won a PBL Most Valuable Player Award in the process. Aside from that, he also was part of the national basketball team of the Philippines that won the Gold Medal at the 1991 Manila SEA Games. This then led Limpot to be the PBA's most sought-after amateur in the 1993 PBA Draft. He was drafted 1st overall by the Sta. The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), established in 1938, is an athletic association of eight Metro Manila universities in the Philippines. The eight-member schools are Adamson University (AdU), Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University (DLSU), Far Eastern University (FEU), National University (Philippines), National University (NU), University of the East (UE), University of the Philippines Diliman (UP), and the University of Santo Tomas (UST). Johnny Abarrientos
Johnny Abarrientos (born July 17, 1970) is a Filipino retired professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association. He was also a many-time member of the Philippine National team, and was the 1996 PBA Most Valuable Player, becoming the shortest player to win the league's highest individual award. He is known by many as The Flying A when he started playing for the Alaska Milkmen in 1993. He is currently an assistant coach for the Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots and for the FEU Tamaraws. Amateur career Abarrientos began his basketball career in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines for the Far Eastern University Tamaraws alongside future pro Victor Pablo and led the Tamaraws to two UAAP crowns in 1991 and 1992.
