Theodoros Ziakas (municipality)
Theodoros Ziakas () is a municipal unit of the Grevena municipality. Before the 2011 local government reform it was an independent municipality. The 2021 census recorded 1,012 residents in the municipal unit. Theodoros Ziakas covers an area of 241.768 km2. The seat of the municipality was in Mavranaioi. Name It was named after Theodoros Ziakas, a 19th-century leader of the Greek struggle for independence. Western Macedonia (, ) is one of the thirteen Regions of Greece, administrative regions of Greece, consisting of the western part of Macedonia (Greece), Macedonia. Grevena (, ''Perifereiakí Enótita Grevenón'') is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the modern regions of Greece, region of Western Macedonia. Its capital is the town of Grevena. Geography Grevena borders the regional units of Ioannina (regional unit), Ioannina (Epirus (region), Epirus) to the west, Kastoria (regional unit), Kastoria to the northwest, Kozani (regional unit), Kozani to the north and east, Larissa (regional unit), Larissa to the southeast and Trikala (regional unit), Trikala to the south. The Pindus mountains cover the western part of the regional unit. Other mountain ranges are Chasia in the south and Vourinos in the northeast. Grevena (, ''Grevená'' ; ) is a town and Communities and Municipalities of Greece, municipality in Western Macedonia, northern Greece, capital of the Grevena (regional unit), Grevena regional unit. The town's current population is 12,515 citizens (2021). It lies about from Athens and about from Thessaloniki. The municipality's population is 25,905. Grevena has had access to the A2 motorway (Greece), A2 motorway (Egnatia Odos) since the early 2000s, which now connects Igoumenitsa with Thessaloniki and Alexandroupoli at the border with Turkey. Mavranaioi () is a village and a community of the Grevena municipality. Before the 2011 local government reform it was a part of the municipality of Theodoros Ziakas, of which it was a municipal district and the seat. The 2021 census recorded 223 residents in the community. The community of Mavranaioi covers an area of 37.934 km2. Theodoros Ziakas
Theodoros Ziakas (; Mavronoros, Grevena, 1798 – Atalanti, 1882) was a chieftain in Macedonia during the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Biography His family were Armatoloi in Western Macedonia. When the Greek War of Independence broke out, Theodoros and his brother Yiannoulas, who was the successor in the leadership of "Ziakas' Armatoliki", begun the war to the Ottomans and liberated the region of Grevena. In 1826 Mehmet Agha leader of Ottoman military troops attacked and destroyed the headquarters of "Ziakas' Armatoliki" in Grevena. Yannulas Ziakas was killed in that battle, but Theodoros got away in Southern Greece. Two years later, Theodoros Ziakas returned in Grevena region, took over the leadership of "Ziakas' Armatoliki" and established his new headquarters in Pindus mountains (Valia Kalda).
