Tejano Music
Tejano music ( es, música tejana), also known as Tex-Mex music, is a popular music style fusing Mexican and US influences. Typically, Tejano combines Mexican Spanish vocal styles with dance rhythms from Czech and German genres – particularly polka or waltz. Tejano music is traditionally played by small groups featuring accordion and guitar or bajo sexto. Its evolution began in northern Mexico (a variation known as ). Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form during the mid-1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom. Texas Country Music
Texas country music (more popularly known just as Texas country or Texas music) is a rapidly growing subgenre of country music from Texas. Texas country is a unique style of Western music and is often associated with other distinct neighboring styles, including Red Dirt from Oklahoma, the New Mexico music of New Mexico, and Tejano in Texas, all of which have influenced one another over the years, and are popular throughout Texas, the Midwest, the Southwest, and other parts of the Western United States. Texas Country is known for fusing neotraditional country with the outspoken, care-free views of outlaw country. Jay Perez
Jay Perez (born September 23, 1963) is an American Tejano musician, who is known for his mixing of rhythm and blues with traditional Tejano music. Career Jay was born in San Antonio on September 21, 1963. He was raised by his mother, Janie Narranjo. He attended John Jay High School and dropped out his Junior year to work and provide for is brother and sister. Initially a drummer for Mysterio Band with Albert Castaneda, he then became a leading vocalist for Latin Breed and David Lee Garza y los Musicales. Perez began a solo career in the early 1990s and has released several solo albums. He has also won several Tejano Music Awards. To his fan base, he is known as "The Voice", and “El Hijo De San Antonio”. Oscar Estrada
Oscar Estrada (February 15, 1904 – January 2, 1978) was a Major League Baseball pitcher who appeared in one game for the St. Louis Browns in 1929. The left-hander stood 5'8" and weighed 160 lbs. Estrada played in 1924 and 1925 for the integrated Cuban Stars (East) in the Eastern Colored League but most of his baseball career was in Cuba. In 1926 and 1927, Estrada pitched for the Lynn Papooses of the New England League. He played for the Shreveport Sports in 1929. On April 21, 1929, the 25-year-old Estrada came in to pitch the top of the 9th inning in a home game against the Detroit Tigers at Sportsman's Park. He was the Browns' fourth pitcher in the game, relieving Herb Cobb. He pitched a scoreless inning, although he allowed a hit and a walk, but the Browns lost 16–9. His lifetime ERA stands at 0.00. Laura Canales
Laura Canales (August 19, 1954 – April 16, 2005) was an American Tejano musician and an original inductee in the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame. Canales was born in Kingsville, Texas. Early years Laura Canales was raised in Kingsville, Texas. She attended Henrietta M. King High School in Kingsville. After graduation, her father, Perfecto, encouraged her to continue her pursuit of a ''tejano'' music career. She made her recording debut in 1973 with Los Unicos while simultaneously singing with renowned Texas ''conjunto'' and ''norteño'' group Conjunto Bernal. In the mid-1970s, Canales was a founding member of ''tejano'' band Snowball & Company, which also went by the name, Felicidad. Elsa Garcia (born 1956) is a Mexican American Tejano singer and producer from Houston, Texas, United States. She has had four albums certified gold, and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1991 for her album, ''Simplemente''. Early life Elsa Garcia was born in Monterrey, Mexico. The daughter of Mexican singer Hermelinda “Linda La Norteña” Escamilla, she was introduced to music at an early age. At age of two, she emigrated to Houston, Texas. Career Garcia started as a replacement vocalist for her husband's band after their lead singer was experiencing throat problems and could not perform. La Sombra
La Sombra de Chicago or La Sombra de Tony Guerrero or even the Windy City Boys is a Tejano band founded by Tony Guerrero. Originally from the Chicago suburb of Aurora, Illinois, the group gained national acclaim and success after moving to Corpus Christi, Texas, the headquarters of their label, Freddie Records. Career La Sombra released over twenty full-length studio albums featuring songs in both Spanish and English. Following numerous line-up changes, the group disbanded in 1995, briefly reuniting in 2008 for a number of live shows. Mazz
Mazz is a Tejano band originally from Brownsville, Texas. The band was known for their idiosyncratic and innovative form of Tejano cumbia which made them distinguishable among their counterparts. Mazz became one of the most popular Tejano music bands during the genre's 1990s golden age. Mazz won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and in 2009, the most wins for a Tejano musician. They landed their first major recording contract with EMI Latin in the early 1990s, before switching to Freddie Records in 1999. Joe Lopez and Jimmy Gonzalez formed Mazz in 1978 before disbanding and creating smaller bands throughout their careers.
