Tyuleny Island (Caspian Sea)
Tyuleny Island (Russian: Тюлений) is an uninhabited island in the Caspian Sea. It belongs to the Dagestan Republic, a federal subject of the Russian Federation. Geography The island is located 47 km (29 miles) east of the Dagestan coastline, in the Caspian Sea, near the entrance to the Kizlyar Gulf. long and wide. There is a weather station on it. Environment There are many Caspian seals in Tyuleny, hence its name, which means "seal" in Russian. Since parts of the islands are marshy, there are also many birds. The island has been designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International because it supports significant numbers of Dalmatian pelicans, little bustards and great cormorants on passage. The Tyuleniy Archipelago ( ''Tülen araldary'', ), is an island group in the north-eastern Caspian Sea off the Mangyshlak Bay west of the Mangyshlak Peninsula and about northwest of the Tupkaragan Peninsula, north of Bautino. Perhaps the most substantial group of islands in the Caspian, they were first accurately mapped by Fedor Ivanovich Soimonov who led the 1719 Caspian Expedition, studying the Caspian Sea from 1719 to 1727. Administratively, the Tyuleniy Archipelago belongs to the Mangystau Region of Kazakhstan. It was named "Tyuleniy" —meaning "seal"— after the currently endangered Caspian seal. Islands *Kulaly Island (Kulaly-Aral) is the westernmost and longest island, stretching from tip to tip. Its shape is slightly irregular, with inlets and headlands. Tyuleny Island (''Ostrov Tyuleniy'') is a small uninhabited island in the Sea of Okhotsk, to the east of Russia's Sakhalin Island, in Northeast Asia. It is also known by its Japanese name (Kaihyo Island) and has two widely used spelling alternatives: Tuleny and Tyuleniy. Geography Tyuleny Island is located off the eastern side of the Gulf of Patience, about 12 kilometers southwest of Cape Patience (Sakhalin Island). The island is less than 700 meters long and 40–90 meters wide, with a total area of 0.053 km2. It contains sandy beaches and features a 18-meter-high rock with cliffs and a large plateau on the top. Large sandy spits are found on the south and north of the island. Tyuleny used to be connected to the Cape Patience in the geological past.
