Two-phase Electric Power
Two-phase electrical power was an early 20th-century polyphase alternating current electric power distribution system. Two circuits were used, with voltage phases differing by one-quarter of a cycle, 90°. Usually circuits used four wires, two for each phase. Less frequently, three wires were used, with a common wire with a larger-diameter conductor. Some early two-phase generators had two complete rotor and field assemblies, with windings physically offset to provide two-phase power. The generators at Niagara Falls installed in 1895 were the largest generators in the world at that time, and were two-phase machines. Three-phase systems eventually replaced the original two-phase power systems for power transmission and utilization. Active two-phase distribution systems remain in Center City Philadelphia, where many commercial buildings are permanently wired for two-phase, and in Hartford, Connecticut. Two-phase Commit Protocol
In transaction processing, databases, and computer networking, the two-phase commit protocol (2PC, ''tupac'') is a type of Atomic commit, atomic commitment protocol (ACP). It is a distributed algorithm that coordinates all the processes that participate in a Distributed transaction, distributed atomic transaction on whether to Commit (data management), commit or abort (roll back) the transaction. This protocol (a specialised type of Consensus (computer science), consensus protocol) achieves its goal even in many cases of temporary system failure (involving either process, network node, communication, etc. failures), and is thus widely used.Phil Bernstein, Philip A. Two-phase Flow
In fluid mechanics, two-phase flow is a flow of gas and liquid — a particular example of multiphase flow. Two-phase flow can occur in various forms, such as flows transitioning from pure liquid to vapor as a result of external heating, separated flows, and dispersed two-phase flows where one phase is present in the form of particles, droplets, or bubbles in a continuous carrier phase (i.e. gas or liquid). Categorization The widely accepted method to categorize two-phase flows is to consider the velocity of each phase as if there is not other phases available. The parameter is a hypothetical concept called Superficial velocity. Examples and applications Historically, probably the most commonly studied cases of two-phase flow are in large-scale power systems.
