Les Twentyman
Leslie Jack Twentyman (3 February 1948 – 30 March 2024) was an Australian youth outreach worker and community activist. Raised in Braybrook, Victoria, he was a football player and coach, before becoming a social worker in the City of Sunshine. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1994 and Victorian of the Year in 2004 for his outreach work. Twentyman also was an independent candidate for the Victorian Legislative Council in 1992 and 1996, and in the 2008 Kororoit state by-election. He was one of Victoria's best-known social campaigners on issues ranging from homelessness, drug abuse, prison reform, and welfare. Collier Twentyman Smithers
Collier Twentyman Smithers (1867 – 7 December 1943) was a portrait, figure and rustic painter. He was born in Buenos Aires, the son of Arthur Edward Smithers, a banker. In 1892 Smithers was living at 5 Primrose Hill Studios off Fitzroy Road, north London. This may account for his stylistic similarity to John William Waterhouse, who also lived at Primrose Hill Studios. From 1892 to 1936 he exhibited at the Royal Academy; the Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Manchester City Art Gallery; New Gallery; and the Royal Hibernian Academy and his work received popular reviews. He was a Freeman of the City of London, being admitted to the Worshipful Company of Turners in 1893. He died in 1943 at 36 Roland Gardens, London. Paintings * R. Geoff Twentyman
Geoffrey Twentyman (19 January 1930 – 16 February 2004) was an English footballer who is mainly remembered for his links with Liverpool F.C. as both a player and as chief scout. Playing career Born in Brampton, Cumberland, the left-half played for Swift Rovers as an amateur and Carlisle United. Twentyman stood and was a strong, robust player who made his name at Carlisle as a centre-back having been switched there by Bill Shankly during his spell as manager of the Brunton Park club. He was spotted by Don Welsh, who signed him for Liverpool in December 1953 for £10,000, he made his debut on 19 December in a league match against arch rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford. United won 5–1. His first goal came almost a year later on 9 November 1954 in a 2–1 win over Hull City in a Second Division match at Anfield. Lawrence Holme Twentyman
Lawrwnce Holme Twentyman (8 May 1783 – 8 June 1852) was a Silversmith in Cape Town, in what is now South Africa. Life Lawrence Holme Twentyman was born in Tithebarn St., Liverpool son of John Middleton Twentyman (a Cooper and Trader) and Phoebe Holme. In 1818 he went to the Cape with his younger brother William Holme Twentyman after they inherited money from a great uncle. The brothers arrived in Cape Town on 12 June 1818 on the ‘Ann’ and Lawrence opened a shop at the corner of Wale Street and the Heerengracht (Adderley Street) in Cape Town. Lawrence was a watchmaker & silversmith, and later became a partner in Twentyman & Co with John Chrisholm in 1820 running his own shop next door to that of his brother. Richard Twentyman
(Alfred) Richard Twentyman (1903–1979) was an England, English architect based in Wolverhampton; chiefly known for modernist buildings around the English midlands. Life Twentyman was born in 1903 in Bilbrook, Staffordshire, Bilbrook, Staffordshire. He was educated at Cambridge University where he studied engineering and then architecture at the Architectural Association in London. In 1933 he joined H. E. Lavender in Wolverhampton and formed Lavender and Twentyman. He served with the Royal Engineers during World War II. Twentyman was awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects#RIBA Awards, RIBA bronze medal in 1953 and received a Civic Trust Award in 1970. He was an accomplished watercolourist and painter in oils, holding an exhibition of his works at a London gallery in 1978. William Holme Twentyman
William Holme Twentyman (31 October 1802 – 7 May 1884) was a silversmith in Cape Town, who amassed a considerable fortune on Mauritius and retired at the age of 39. Whilst on Mauritius he created a sealed case for a pocket watch to be worn under water. After trials soldered lugs were incorporated and a "strong canvas" band was tied to the wrist for ease of use. Twentyman also painted the dial orange as to be more clearly seen underwater. This creation was known as the Twentyman "orange gorilla" due to its large size. Percy Twentyman-Jones
Percy Sydney Twentyman-Jones (13 September 1876 – 8 March 1954) was a South African jurist and sportsman who played international cricket in one Test in 1902, and international rugby union in three Tests in 1896. After his sporting career, he became a judge. Early life and education Twentyman-Jones was born in Beaufort West, the fourth of the six children of Alfred George Twentyman Jones, a merchant, and his wife Eliza Arderne. The family later moved to Muizenberg where Alfred died on 8 July 1885, leaving his wife and six minor children. Twentyman-Jones received his education at the Diocesan College where he took the BA degree of the University of the Cape of Good Hope in 1896.
