The Tupelo Micropolitan Statistical Area is a micropolitan area in northeastern Mississippi that covers three counties— Itawamba, Lee and Pontotoc. As of the 2000 census, the area had a population of 125,251. The population at the 2020 Census was 138,390. Pontotoc County, Mississippi
Pontotoc County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2020 census, the population was 31,184. Its county seat is Pontotoc. It was created on February 9, 1836, from lands ceded to the United States under the Chickasaw Cession. Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word meaning "land of hanging grapes". The original Natchez Trace and the current-day Natchez Trace Parkway both pass through the southeast corner of Pontotoc County. Sherman, Mississippi
Sherman is a town which straddles Lee, Pontotoc, and Union counties in Mississippi. The population was 600 at the 2020 census. History In 1840 Reuben Jones and John Witt settled what is now the Sherman community fourteen miles northeast of Pontotoc, however the town owes its formation and growth to the building of the old Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad. When the operation of trains was begun on the newly built railroad in 1886 a station was established and named Sherman by a resident who had formerly lived in Sherman, Texas. R.P. Kelly built the first home in the spring of 1886. Other citizens and businessmen of the town were John Witt, J.E. Wade, and John Johnson. The Mississippi Normal Institute was founded in 1889 by Professor J.N. Davis and a boarding house was maintained in connection with the institute. Shannon, Mississippi
Shannon is a town in Lee County, Mississippi. The population was 1,496 at the 2020 Census. Shannon is located on Mississippi Highway 145, west of U.S. Route 45. Chiwapa Creek flows south of the town. History The town is named for Samuel Shannon, who purchased land at that location from Chickasaw Chief Itawamba in the early 1800s, then built a cabin and a farm. More settlers arrived following the Treaty of Pontotoc, which ceding Chickasaw land in exchange for financial compensation. In the early 1800s, Constantine Shannon brought strawberry plants from Shannon to Plant City, Florida, enabling the creation of a multimillion-dollar industry in Plant City. Nettleton, Mississippi
Nettleton is a city in Lee and Monroe counties in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The population was 1,935 at the 2020 census. Incorporated in 1888, the town was named after George Henry Nettleton, president of the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad (KCM&B). Geography The city sits on the boundary line between Lee County on the north and Monroe County on the south, with approximately equal portions of the city in either county. As of the 2020 census, 1,090 of the city's 1,935 residents (56.3%) lived in Monroe County and 845 (43.7%) in Lee County. Mantachie, Mississippi
Mantachie is a town in Itawamba County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,121 in the 2020 census. It is located northeast of Tupelo at the intersection of Mississippi Highways 363 and 371 and north of Interstate 22. History The town began as a crossroads store owned and operated by Woods Pearce. Near Mantachie on the old Jacinto Road was the largest Chickasaw village in this section of the state. Mantachie was named for one of the Chickasaw chiefs, Man-ta-chee. Guntown, officially the City of Guntown, is a city in Lee County, Mississippi, United States. It is located in the northern part of the Tupelo micropolitan area. The population was 2,410 at the 2020 Census. History Guntown is named for Virginia loyalist ''émigré'' James G. Gunn ( d. 1826) who found asylum among the Chickasaw in present-day Lee County. During the American Civil War, United States Cavalry officers described it as "a station and small village on the Mobile & Ohio road." Founded on April 13, 1866, it was initially incorporated as the "Town of Guntown" on February 16, 1867. Ecru is a town in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. The population was 895 at the 2010 census. Ecru is home to the largest upholstered furniture plant in the world which manufactures Ashley Furniture. History Ecru was established by Colonel William Clark Falkner, a prominent post-Civil War businessman. The name of the town comes from the color of its first railroad depot. Verona is a city in Lee County, Mississippi. The population was 2,792 at the 2020 census, down from 3,006 at the 2010 census. History Verona was settled in 1857 with the construction of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, and was chartered in July 1860, making it the oldest city in Lee County.
