Tug, Inshore And Dock
TID was a standardized British design for a tugboat drawn up and built during the Second World War. One hundred and eighty two (TID-1 to TID-12 and TID-14 to TID-183) were built for the Ministry of War Transport. Manufacture Richard Dunston Ltd., a shipbuilding company with yards at Thorne on the Stainforth and Keadby Canal and at Hessle on the Humber, had pioneered the use of welded construction, rather than the more conventional rivetting, since 1933, although they had never built an all-welded vessel. An order for 12 tugs in 1942 was the opportunity to try such a design. They designed the hulls so that they could be made up from eight separate sections, which were fabricated by manufacturers with spare welding capacity. Richard Dunston
Richard Dunston was a shipbuilder on the Humber, England. The company started building wooden barges miles from the sea and evolved to pioneer fully welded steel ships of a single design. The yard is now closed, although the name continues in a ship repair yard. History Before 1858, Richard Dunston owned a boatyard at Torksey on the Foss Dyke, but in that year he sold the yard, and established a new one at Thorne, on the north bank of the Stainforth and Keadby Canal. It was from the River Trent, and some from the sea. He built wooden barges, using locally-grown, hand-sawn timber. In common with many boatyards at the time, Dunston's was self-contained, with facilities for making sails, ropes and running gear. This developed into a profitable sideline, supplying ropes to many local industries, and other items to chandlers based at Hull and Grimsby. The Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) was a department of the British Government formed early in the Second World War to control transportation policy and resources. It was formed by merging the Ministry of Shipping and the Ministry of Transport, bringing responsibility for both shipping and land transport to a single department, and easing problems of co-ordination of transport in wartime. The MoWT was founded on 1 May 1941, when Lord Leathers was appointed Minister of War Transport. Stainforth And Keadby Canal
The Stainforth and Keadby Canal is a navigable canal in South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, England. It connects the River Don Navigation at Bramwith to the River Trent at Keadby, by way of Stainforth, South Yorkshire, Stainforth, Thorne, South Yorkshire, Thorne and Ealand, near Crowle, Lincolnshire, Crowle. It opened in 1802, passed into the control of the River Don Navigation in 1849, and within a year was controlled by the first of several railway companies. Steam Tug Brent
The steam tug ''Brent'' is a tugboat. She was built in 1945 as the TID-class tug ''TID 159'' for the Ministry of War Transport. Completed too late to take part in the Second World War, she was sold in 1946 to the Port of London Authority and renamed ''Brent''. She spent the next 23 years as a dredger, removing debris from the navigable channels of the Thames, before the decline of the London Docks and the replacement of steam-powered vessels by diesel-fired ones led to her sale. Intended to be scrapped, she was bought from a ship-breaking yard by Ron Hall in 1971. Hall converted ''Brent'' into a residential yacht and his family sailed her recreationally, largely along the eastern coast of Britain. Problems with her boiler led her to be laid up in 1994.
