''Transforming the Space'' is the debut album by the FAB Trio, a collaborative ensemble named after the first letters of the musicians' last names, featuring double bassist Joe Fonda, drummer Barry Altschul, and violinist Billy Bang. It was recorded on February 17 and 18, 2003, at the Spirit Room in Rossie, New York, and was released later that year by CIMP. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Steve Loewy called the album "a delightful set," and noted the musicians' "collective virtuosity and joyous enthusiasm." He wrote: "It all has a certain sense of completeness, as though by the last selection the trio has accomplished its task with an unobtrusive reverence." Derek Taylor of ''All About Jazz'' praised the music's "startling intellect and emotion," stating that the trio "generates a body of music on par with what the players' individual reputations would suggest." Free jazz, or free form in the early to mid-1970s, is a style of avant-garde jazz or an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, Musical tone, tones, and chord changes. Musicians during this period believed that the bebop and modal jazz that had been played before them was too limiting, and became preoccupied with creating something new. CIMP
Creative Improvised Music Projects, usually abbreviated CIMP or C.I.M.P., is an American jazz record company and label. It is associated with ''Cadence'' magazine and Cadence Jazz Records. The label is noted for its minimal use of electronic processing and its spare microphoning technique. Bob Rusch founded CIMP in 1995, with his son Marc Rusch as the recording engineer and his daughter Kara Rusch producing cover art. The label recorded its first session in 1995 for an album that featured Evan Parker, Barry Guy, Paul Lytton, and Joe McPhee. From the beginning, it has concentrated on avant-garde jazz. Its catalogue includes Marshall Allen, Herb Robertson, Paul Smoker, Glenn Spearman, and Steve Swell. Most of its releases are recorded in its own studio in Rossie, New York. Robert D. Rusch (April 3, 1943 – January 14, 2024) was an American critic, jazz critic and record producer. Biography Robert D. Rusch was born in New York City on April 3, 1943. studied clarinet and drums in his youth. During the 1970s, Rusch played drums in workshops with Jaki Byard and Cedar Walton. He wrote for the magazines ''Down Beat'', ''Jazz Journal'' and ''Jazz Forum'' in the 1970s before founding ''Cadence Magazine'' in 1975. Joe Fonda (born December 16, 1954) is an American jazz Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its roots are in blues, ragtime, European harmony, African rhythmic rituals, spirituals, h ... bassist. Career Fonda was born in Amsterdam, New York to parents who both played jazz. Barry Altschul
Barry Altschul (born January 6, 1943, in New York City) is a free jazz and hard bop drummer who first came to notice in the late 1960s for performing with pianists Paul Bley and Chick Corea. Biography Altschul is of Russian Jewish heritage, the son of a laborer who did construction work and drove a taxi. Having initially taught himself to play drums, Altschul studied with Charlie Persip during the 1960s. In the latter part of the decade, he performed with Paul Bley. In 1969 he joined with Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Anthony Braxton to form the group Circle. At the time, he made use of a high-pitched Gretsch kit with add-on drums and percussion instruments.
