José Luis Guerín
José Luis Guerín (born 1960) is a Spanish filmmaker and educator known for '' Train of Shadows'' (1997), ' (2001), and '' The Academy of Muses'' (2015). Style and influences As a young cinephile, Guerín attended many film screenings, made films on Super 8 and 16mm and sought out and befriended many of the filmmakers he admired, including Robert Bresson, Raoul Ruiz and Philippe Garrel. Guerín's films are often described as being influenced by the Lumière Brothers, Howard Hawks, Yasujirō Ozu and John Ford (Guerín went so far as to shoot a film in Cong the setting of Innisfree in Ford's '' The Quiet Man''). Guerín is known for his meditative and intellectually curious work in both documentary and narrative filmmaking. In 1977, he was elected Senator in Spain's first democratic elections and participated in the writing of the Spanish Constitution. The Méliès d'Or (; ) is an award presented annually by the Méliès International Festivals Federation (MIFF), an international network of genre film festivals from Europe. The Méliès d'Or was introduced in 1996 for science fiction, fantasy, and horror films. The award is named after film director Georges Méliès. Spanish filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia and Danish filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen are the only directors to have won the award twice.
