Town of Bath Historic District is a national historic district located at Berkeley Springs, Morgan County, West Virginia. The district originally encompassed 218 contributing buildings, 3 contributing sites, 6 contributing structures, and 1 contributing object. It consists of the community's central business district, along with the previously listed Berkeley Springs State Park, a small industrial area east of the downtown, and residential areas surrounding the downtown which also contain several churches and two cemeteries. The buildings are generally two stories in height and are primarily built of brick, wood, and concrete block, and set on foundations of native limestone and brick. Located within the district boundaries are the previously listed Berkeley Springs Train Depot, T. H. B. Berkeley Springs, West Virginia
Berkeley Springs, formally named Bath, is a town in Morgan County, West Virginia, United States, and its county seat. The population was 758 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. In 1776, the Virginia Legislature incorporated a town around the springs and named it Bath. Since 1802, it has been referred to by the name of its original post office, Berkeley Springs. It is located in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia and is part of the Hagerstown metropolitan area, Hagerstown–Martinsburg metropolitan area. The area contains mineral water springs frequented by Native Americans in the United States, Native Americans indigenous to the area, possibly for thousands of years. After settlement by Europeans, the mineral springs drew many visitors from urban areas. Notable colonial visitors to the area included George Washington and James Rumsey. Morgan County, West Virginia
Morgan County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,063. Its county seat is Berkeley Springs. The county was formed in 1820 from parts of Hampshire and Berkeley Counties and named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, prominent soldier of the American Revolutionary War. The county and town of Bath are considered excellent jumping-off points for exploring the Potomac and Cacapon Rivers just to the north and west, respectively. Berkeley Springs State Park
Berkeley Springs State Park is a state park situated in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, United States. The centerpiece of the Park is its historic mineral spa. These waters were celebrated for their medicinal or restorative powers and were generally taken internally for digestive disorders, or bathed in for stress relief. Native Americans visited these springs as did George Washington. Berkeley Springs is the only state-run spa in the United States and is operated by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. History The park is located on land which has been used as a health resort since the 1750s as the property of Lord Fairfax. On 18 March 1748, George Washington, then 16, visited the spa for the first time. Berkeley Springs Train Depot
Berkeley Springs station is a historic railway depot located at Berkeley Springs, Morgan County, West Virginia. The depot is a one-story, rectangular red brick building with a bell-cast, red tile roof and measures approximately 80 feet long by 20 feet wide. It features Mission Revival style details. History It was built in 1915 by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. At its peak in the 1920s and 1930s the railroad spur was used for shipping produce and pulpwood. It ceased use as a passenger depot in 1935. Up until the 1990s, the town's administrative office, municipal court and police department were housed in the depot. After that it was used as a music shop and art gallery, among other things. Clarence Hovermale House, also known as Hovermale-Mendenhall House and most recently thMendenhall 1884 Inn is a historic home located at Berkeley Springs, Morgan County, West Virginia. It was built in 1884, and is a two-story, brick Queen Anne style dwelling that follows a modified, ell-shaped "I"-house plan. Also on the property is a shed, built about 1860. Sloat-Horn-Rossell House, also known as "The Manor," is a historic home located at Berkeley Springs, Morgan County, West Virginia. It was built in 1879, and is a large two-story Second Empire style dwelling with board-and-batten siding.
