The torr (symbol: Torr) is a Pressure#Units, unit of pressure based on an absolute scale, defined as exactly of a standard atmosphere (unit), atmosphere (101325 Pa). Thus one torr is exactly (≈ ). Historically, one torr was intended to be the same as one "millimetre of mercury", but subsequent redefinitions of the two units of measurement, units made the torr marginally lower (by less than 0.000015%). The torr is not part of the International System of Units (SI). Even so, it is often combined with the metric prefix milli to name one millitorr (mTorr), equal to 0.001 Torr. The unit was named after Evangelista Torricelli, an Italian physicist and mathematician who discovered the principle of the barometer in 1644. Torr Works
Torr Works quarry, is a limestone quarry at East Cranmore, near Shepton Mallet on the Mendip Hills, Somerset, England. The quarry was formerly known as Merehead, a name which has been retained for its rail depot on the opposite side of the A361 road. Geology The site, located not far from a limestone deposit, covers an area of some 205 hectares, including 60 hectares which have been landscaped to blend with the surrounding countryside. A geodiversity audit of the site in 2004 recorded pale to dark grey well bedded Carboniferous Limestone dipping consistently southwards with a small area of overlying horizontally bedded buff-coloured Jurassic oolite, oolitic limestone forming an angular unconformity. History In 1938 the recently opened Merehead Quarry was taken over by Limmer and Trinidad. Twenty-five men were employed at the time. John Torrey
John Torrey (August 15, 1796 – March 10, 1873) was an American botany, botanist, chemist, and physician. Throughout much of his career, he was a teacher of chemistry, often at multiple universities, while he also pursued botanical work, focusing on the flora of North America. His most renowned works include studies of the New York flora, the Mexican Boundary, the Pacific railroad surveys, and the uncompleted ''Flora of North America''. Cary (barony)
Cary is a historic barony in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. To its north is the north-Antrim coast, and it is bordered by three other baronies: Dunluce Lower to the west; Dunluce Upper to the south; and Glenarm Lower to the south-east. The Giant's Causeway is situated on the north coast of Cary. Dunineny Castle lies in the civil parish of Ramoan within this barony. Gweedore ( , officially known by its Irish language name, ) is a Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) district, and parish, located on the Atlantic coast of County Donegal in the north-west of Ireland. It stretches some from Glasserchoo and Bloody Foreland in the north to Crolly in the south and around from Dunlewey in the east to Magheraclogher and Magheralosk in the west, and is sometimes described as one of Europe's most densely populated rural areas. Törr is a Czech metal band founded in Prague in 1977. They are considered one of the first Czech black metal bands. To date, they have released ten studio albums, two live albums, and two compilations. History Early years: 1977–1986 Törr, named after the unit of pressure, was formed in 1977 by vocalist and guitarist Ota Hereš and drummer Pavel Kadeřábek, though the original spelling of their name lacked the metal umlaut it sports today. The band began by playing heavy metal, and a year later, they were joined by bass player Filip Moldan. Michael Jakubův soon replaced Kadeřábek on drums and in 1980, they added a second guitarist, Jiří Podzimek, becoming a foursome. Torrs Hydro
Torrs Hydro is a micro hydroelectric scheme, owned by the community, in New Mills, Derbyshire. It is on the River Goyt, immediately below its confluence with the River Sett at the Torr weir. A 2.4-metre diameter steel trough screw turbine generates up to 63 kW of electricity. __TOC__ History Torr weir was built across the Goyt to provide a head for the Torr Mill, which occupied the same site. Torr Mill burnt down in 1912. On 20 September 2007 Torrs Hydro New Mills Limited, an Industrial and Provident Society for the Benefit of the Community, was formed. £100,000 of capital was raised from 200 members. Construction began in March 2008, and on 8 June the screw was delivered. It weighs 11 tonnes. Commissioning started in August and the scheme was handed over on 4 September 2008.
