Tor Cairn
A tor cairn is a prehistoric cult site occurring in the British Isles, especially in Cornwall and Devon but also in Wales. It consists of a circular enclosure of stones or a platform of loose rocks surrounding a natural tor, sometimes encircled by a ditch. The diameter of the roughly 35 tor cairns ranges from 12 to over 30 metres and their height varies from 0.5 to 4.0 metres. There is usually an entrance to the enclosed area and pits in the ground between the rock outcrop (tor) itself and the enclosure.Darvill, Timothy (2008). Megalithic Monuments In England
A megalith is a large stone that has been used to construct a prehistoric structure or monument, either alone or together with other stones. There are over 35,000 in Europe alone, located widely from Sweden to the Mediterranean sea. The word was first used in 1849 by the British antiquarian Algernon Herbert in reference to Stonehenge and derives from the Ancient Greek words "mega" for great and "lithos" for stone. Most extant megaliths were erected between the Neolithic period (although earlier Mesolithic examples are known) through the Chalcolithic period and into the Bronze Age. Tor Enclosure
A tor enclosure is a prehistoric monument found in the southwestern part of Great Britain. These monuments emerged around 4000 BCE in the early Neolithic. Tor enclosures are large enclosures situated near natural rock outcrops, especially tors, on hilltops or the sides of hills. They consist of one or more roughly circular stone walls built around the tor. They are comparable to the causewayed enclosures found elsewhere in the British Isles and many are of similar Neolithic date although others are from later in prehistory. Examples The best known examples are Carn Brea in Cornwall, the first to be identified, following excavations in the early 1970s, and Helman Tor between Bodmin and Lostwithiel in the same county. British megalith architecture is the study of those ancient cultures that built megalithic sites on the British Isles, including the research and documentation of these sites. The classification sometimes used of these cultures based on geological criteria is problematic. The neolithic sites of Britain are amongst the most varied in the prehistory of Europe. Yes Tor
Yes Tor is the second highest point on Dartmoor, Devon, South West England, at above sea level. It is one of only two wholly English peaks south of the Peak District National Park—the other being nearby High Willhays—that are above . Rough Tor (), or Roughtor, is a Tor (rock formation), tor on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, United Kingdom. The site is composed of the tor summit and Rocking stone, logan stone, a neolithic tor enclosure, a large number of Bronze Age hut circles, and some contemporary monuments. Toponymy In the 19th-century the hill was known as ''Router''. Geography Rough Tor is approximately one mile northwest of Brown Willy, Cornwall's highest point, on Bodmin Moor.
