Tom Lynch (BMX Rider)
Tom Lynch had the idea for the first London Ambulance Cycle Response Unit (CRU), with the aim of providing emergency response by bicycle in areas which would be difficult or impossible to get to in a traditional ambulance. A trial of the idea was set up in 1999 in the West End of London. Lynch's connections to the bicycle industry enabled him to contribute to the design of the bikes used in the trial, an example of which can be seen in the Medicine Wellcome Galleries at the Science Museum, London. The trial was a success and the London CRU expanded to Heathrow Airport in 2004, the City of London in 2006 and Kensington and Knightsbridge, Croydon town centre, Canary Wharf and the area around St Pancras International station in 2008. North West Ambulance Service
The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) is the ambulance service for North West England. It is one of ten ambulance trusts providing England with Emergency medical services, and is part of the National Health Service, receiving direct government funding for its role. NWAS was formed on 1 July 2006, following the merger of four previous services (Cumbria Ambulance Service; Lancashire Ambulance Service; Cheshire and Mersey Ambulance Service; and Greater Manchester Ambulance Service) as part of Health Minister Lord Warner's plans to combine ambulance services. Cycle Responder
A cycle responder is a medically trained responder, such as a paramedic or first aider that uses a bicycle to respond to a medical emergency. They are used by professional ambulance services to respond to emergency calls and also by private and voluntary providers of medical cover at events. Cycle responders are provided in order to provide fast, effective medical assistance to patients in areas in which a traditional road ambulance or response car would have a delayed response time, and where responders on foot may not be fast enough, or cannot provide sufficient cover over an area. This means that they are primarily deployed in areas of high traffic congestion, such as city centres, with large cities such as London and Manchester making extensive use of them. Emergency Medical Responders
Emergency medical responders are people who are specially trained to provide out-of-hospital care in medical emergencies. There are many different types of emergency medical responders, each with different levels of training, ranging from first aid and basic life support. Emergency medical responders have a very limited scope of practice and have the least amount of comprehensive education, clinical experience or clinical skills of emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. The EMR program is not intended to replace the roles of emergency medical technicians or paramedics and their wide range of specialties.
