Tollgate (Hale Single)
A tollbooth (or toll booth) is an enclosure placed along a toll road that is used for the purpose of collecting a toll from passing traffic. A structure consisting of several tollbooths placed next to each other is called a toll plaza, tollgate, or toll station. They have historically been staffed by transportation agents who manually collect the toll, but, in the modern day, many have been replaced with automatic electronic toll collection systems, such as E-ZPass in the Northeastern United States. Replacement In the 21st century, electronic toll collection (ETC) has replaced former locations of tollbooths around the world. ETC is an automated system that allows drivers to pay tolls without stopping. Benefits of automatic toll collection include reducing air pollution and fuel consumption, and saving motorists time and money compared to traditional tollbooths. The COVID-19 pandemic led to further losses of tollbooths, causing the U.S. state of Maryland to accelerate i ...

The Toll-Gate
''The Toll-Gate'' is a Regency novel by Georgette Heyer, which takes place in 1817.See http://www.georgette-heyer.com/chron.html Unlike many of Heyer's historical novels which concentrate on a plucky heroine, this one follows the adventures of a male main character, an ex-captain in the British Army who has returned from the Peninsular War and finds life as a civilian rather dull. The setting for this detective/romance story is in and around a Toll-Gate in the Peak District, vastly different from the elegant backgrounds of London, Bath, Brighton, or some stately home, which characterize most of Heyer's Regency novels. Plot introduction After acting as an aide-de-camp at the Battle of Waterloo, Jack Staple is finding civilian life tedious. Following a formal (and somewhat boring) dinner party in honour of his cousin's engagement, Jack sets out by himself on horseback to visit a more congenial friend some 60 miles away. After getting lost in the dark and rain he reaches a toll-gat ...

Tollgate, Oregon
Tollgate is an unincorporated community in Umatilla County, Oregon, United States. It lies between Weston and Elgin on Oregon Route 204. The area was first homesteaded by David J. Woodward. After co-forming the Summerville and Walla Walla Road Co., Woodward purchased land near the headwater of Lookingglass Creek (later dammed in 1922 to create Langdon Lake). A road leading east from the city of Milton and the city of Walla Walla, Washington to the city of Summerville and the Grande Ronde Valley crossed Woodward's property. Woodward installed a toll gate across this portion of the road and charged travelers a fee for access through the gate. The toll road was frequently used as a means to move farm products from Union County to Umatilla County and Walla Walla County. In 1915 Umatilla County, working with other local counties, became interested in improving the toll road. These counties formed the Blue Mountain Highway Association. Among the group's goals was to grave ...
