Tipping Point (band)
Tipping Point is an experimental contemporary jazz quartet from England, founded in 2013 by James Mainwaring. All members are alumni of Leeds College of Music and active in other successful projects. Tipping Point released their debut album, ''The Earthworm's Eye View'', in October 2015 on Lamplight Social Records. The album was described as "Playful, dark, skilful and spontaneous… a surefooted trip across many persuasions in contemporary music" by John Fordham in the Guardian and to have “moments of collective beauty” by Daniel Spicer in '' Jazzwise''. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. Experimental Music
Experimental music is a general label for any music or music genre that pushes existing boundaries and genre definitions. Experimental compositional practice is defined broadly by exploratory sensibilities radically opposed to, and questioning of, institutionalized compositional, performing, and aesthetic conventions in music. Elements of experimental music include indeterminate music, in which the composer introduces the elements of chance or unpredictability with regard to either the composition or its performance. Artists may also approach a hybrid of disparate styles or incorporate unorthodox and unique elements. The practice became prominent in the mid-20th century, particularly in Europe and North America. Leeds College Of Music
Leeds () is a city and the administrative centre of the City of Leeds district in West Yorkshire, England. It is built around the River Aire and is in the eastern foothills of the Pennines. John Fordham (jazz Critic)
John Fordham is a British jazz critic and writer. As well as being the main jazz critic for ''The Guardian'', he publishes a monthly column for the newspaper. He is the author of several books on jazz, and has reported on it for publications including ''Time Out'', ''City Limits'', '' Sounds'', ''Jazz UK'' and ''The Wire''. He is a former editor of ''Time Out'', ''City Limits'' and ''Jazz UK''. He has contributed to documentaries for radio and television, as well as regularly to BBC Radio 3's programme ''Jazz on 3''. James Mainwaring
James Mainwaring is an English jazz composer, saxophonist and bandleader. Childhood and education Mainwaring was born in 1989 in Warrington where he grew up singing in rock bands and joined the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra. In 2007 he moved to Leeds to study jazz at Leeds College of Music and completed an MA in composition from the University of York. Career In 2011 Mainwaring co-found Roller Trio who have released two albums, won the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award 2011 and in 2012 were chosen for BBC introducing, nominated for the Mercury Prize, MOBO best jazz act and best newcomer at the Jazz FM awards. Fender Rhodes
The Rhodes piano (also known as the Fender Rhodes piano) is an electric piano invented by Harold Rhodes, which became popular in the 1970s. Like a conventional piano, the Rhodes generates sound with keys and hammers, but instead of strings, the hammers strike thin metal tines, which vibrate next to an electromagnetic pickup. The signal is then sent through a cable to an external keyboard amplifier and speaker. The instrument evolved from Rhodes's attempt to manufacture pianos while teaching recovering soldiers during World War II. Development continued after the war and into the following decade. In 1959, Fender began marketing the Piano Bass, a cut-down version; the full-size instrument did not appear until after Fender's sale to CBS in 1965.
