Tino (island)
Tino is an Italian island situated in the Ligurian Sea, at the westernmost end of the Gulf of La Spezia. It is part of an archipelago of three closely spaced islands jutting out south from the mainland at Portovenere. The largest of the three, Palmaria (island), Palmaria, lies to the north and the tiny Tinetto to the south. In 1997, the archipelago, together with Portovenere and the Cinque Terre, was designated by UNESCO as a Unesco World Heritage, World Heritage Site. History The patron saint of the Gulf of La Spezia, Venerius the Hermit, Saint Venerius (), is said to have lived on the island as a hermit, and later as abbot, until his death in 630. His feast is celebrated here annually on 13 September. San Venerio Lighthouse
San Venerio Lighthouse () is an active lighthouse on the island of Tino, in the comune of Porto Venere in the Province of La Spezia, Liguria, Italy. Its construction began in 1839, and was completed in 1840. It illuminates and guides the sailors in that part of Ligurian Sea. It is named for Venerius the Hermit, the patron saint of lighthouse keepers. History San Venerio Lighthouse is a fortified neoclassical building, despite having undergone many changes over time. Construction of the lighthouse was granted by King Charles Albert of Savoy and was initially fueled by vegetable oil, followed later by coal. In 1884 another tower was built, taller than the original at high, and at the top of the lenses an optical filament was added, electrically powered by two steam engines. Abbot is an ecclesiastical title given to the head of an independent monastery for men in various Western Christian traditions. Venerius The Hermit
Saint Venerius ( San Venerio) (ca. 560–630) was a monk and hermit. He is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church and is the patron saint of the Gulf of La Spezia and, as of 1961, the patron saint of lighthouse keepers. Traditions concerning him are very uncertain. Life Venerius was born around 560 on the island of Palmaria. He became a hermit in a monastery situated on the island of Tino in the Ligurian Sea. Later he served as abbot until his death in 630. According to legend, a raven brought him food every day. It is thought that a sanctuary was constructed at the place of Venerius' death to contain his relics and that this was extended to form the Benedictine Abbey of San Venerio in eleventh century. The remains of the monastery can be seen on the northern coast of the island.
