Progressive Rock
Progressive rock (shortened as prog rock or simply prog) is a broad genre of rock music that primarily developed in the United Kingdom through the mid- to late 1960s, peaking in the early-to-mid-1970s. Initially termed " progressive pop", the style emerged from psychedelic bands who abandoned standard pop or rock traditions in favour of instrumental and compositional techniques more commonly associated with jazz, folk, or classical music, while retaining the instrumentation typical of rock music. Additional elements contributed to its " progressive" label: lyrics were more poetic, technology was harnessed for new sounds, music approached the condition of " art", and the studio, rather than the stage, became the focus of musical activity, which often involved creating music for listening rather than dancing. Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Emerson, Lake & Palmer (informally known as ELP) were an English progressive rock Supergroup (music), supergroup formed in London in 1970. The band consisted of Keith Emerson (keyboards) of The Nice, Greg Lake (vocals, bass, guitars, producer) of King Crimson, and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion) of Atomic Rooster. With nine Recording Industry Association of America, RIAA-certified gold record albums in the US, and an estimated 48 million records sold worldwide, they are one of the most popular and commercially successful progressive rock groups of the 1970s, with a musical sound including adaptations of classical music with jazz and symphonic rock elements, dominated by Emerson's flamboyant use of the Hammond organ, Moog synthesizer, and piano (although Lake wrote several acoustic songs for the group).Lake says almost dismissively, "It used to be a thing where as a balance to the record I would write an acoustic song." Quiet Sun
Quiet Sun were an English progressive rock/jazz fusion band from the Canterbury scene consisting of Phil Manzanera (guitars), Bill MacCormick (bass), Dave Jarrett (keyboards) and Charles Hayward (drums). History Having originated from a Dulwich College band by the name of Pooh and the Ostrich Feather, Quiet Sun was formed in 1970 after MacCormick had made friends with Robert Wyatt, from manzanera.com the son of a friend of his mother's. The band integrated jazz elements and sparkling keyboard sounds into their complex music, in many ways similar to contemporaries Soft Machine. However, energetic guitar by Manzanera was a distinguishing feature from Soft Machine, who tended to use saxophone as their main melodic element alongside keyboards, and who did not feature lead guitar before the 1975 release of '' Bundles''. Nirvana (Yugoslav Band)
Nirvana was a Yugoslav progressive rock band formed in Zagreb in 1970. Nirvana was a prominent act of the 1970s Yugoslav rock scene. Band history 1970–1976 Nirvana was formed in Zagreb in 1970 by Krešimir Šoštar (guitar, formerly of the bands Mladi, Grešnici and Psalentas), Zdravko Štimac (drums, formerly of Mladi Lavovi and Psalentas) and Tomas Krkač (bass guitar, formerly of Mladi and Psalentas). At the time of the band formation, Šoštar was a student of Indology, in which the other two were also interested, thus naming the band Nirvana. Initially, the band performed covers of Taste, Grand Funk Railroad and other acts, gaining attention of the public as competent instrumentalists. Due to their reputation of a popular live act, the band appeared on numerous festivals throughout Yugoslavia. Mogul Thrash
Mogul Thrash were an English progressive rock band, active in the early 1970s. Biography British jazz-rock band Mogul Thrash evolved from James Litherland's Brotherhood, which in addition to guitarist Litherland (an alumnus of Colosseum who was a founding member of the group in 1969) also featured guitarist/reedist Michael Rosen (previously of Eclection, not the children's poet/author), drummer Bill Harrison and the so-called "Dundee Horns"—saxophonists Roger Ball and Malcolm Duncan. Khan (band)
Khan were an English progressive rock band of the Canterbury Scene during 1971-1972. Formed by Steve Hillage from Uriel (band), Uriel, the initial line-up was Steve Hillage (guitar), Nick Greenwood (bass guitar, from The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (band), The Crazy World of Arthur Brown), Dick Heninghem (organ) and Pip Pyle (percussion). Pyle quickly moved on to Gong (band), Gong and by the time the band played its first gig in June 1971 he had been replaced by Eric Peachey. In October 1971, Dick Heninghem left as well, replaced by Dave Stewart (musician, born 1950), Dave Stewart for the duration of the album sessions. The album ''Space Shanty'' was released in June 1972, followed by a UK tour supporting Caravan (band), Caravan, for which Canadian organist Val Stevens joined. Proto-Kaw
Proto-Kaw is an American progressive rock band. Featuring Kerry Livgren, the group is a reformation of a band formed in the early 1970s which served as the direct precursor to Kansas. History In the early 1970s, the band Kansas went through three incarnations, the common member in all three being composer, keyboardist and guitarist Kerry Livgren. The sound of the band changed along with the group members. Proto-Kaw is a modern name given to the second version of Kansas, whose arrangements prominently featured guitar, keyboards, and saxophone (an instrument not found in the following line-up.) The famous Kansas was actually the third edition of the band, and before a name change it was the third incarnation of Topeka band White Clover. Jutro (Ljubljana Band)
Jutro (trans. ''Morning'') was a Yugoslav rock band formed in Ljubljana in 1970. Initially performing boogie rock and later turning towards jazz rock, Jutro was a prominent act on the Yugoslav rock scene in the 1970s. History 1970–early 1980s Jutro was officially formed on 27 December 1970, in Ljubljana. The band was formed by Zoran Crnković (guitar, vocals), Miro Tomassini (bass guitar), and Dragan Gajić (drums). The band had their debut performance only several days after the official formation, on the New Year's Eve concert in Ljubljana's Tivoli Hall. Jane is a German progressive rock Krautrock band, that was formed in October 1970 in Hanover, Germany. Band history Playing a melodious synthesis of symphonic hard rock, that has occasionally been compared to Pink Floyd, Hannover Krautrockers Jane can trace their origins back to the late sixties psychedelic band ''The J.P.s'' (Justice of Peace). Releasing a single "Save Me"/"War" in 1968, the band featured future Jane members Peter Panka on vocals, Klaus Hess on bass and Werner Nadolny on saxophone. Jackson Heights (band)
Jackson Heights were a British progressive rock band from England. It formed in 1970 after The Nice organist and pianist, Keith Emerson, decided to leave the trio to form another band, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, leaving bassist-vocalist Lee Jackson and drummer Brian Davison on their own. Thus Jackson then formed Jackson Heights, during their brief career which spanned four years they published four albums, ''King Progress'', ''The Fifth Avenue Bus'', ''Ragamuffin's Fool'' and ''Bump n' Grind''. Brian himself formed the short-lived Brian Davison's Every Which Way, which released only one self-titled album, then joined Gong on tour. Lee Jackson and Brian Davison then reunited briefly with Swiss keyboardist Patrick Moraz as part of the trio Refugee which released only one self-titled album in 1974, before Moraz left to join Yes.
