The following is a timeline of the history of the city of Boulder, Colorado, USA. 19th century * 1858 ** October 17 - A group of gold prospectors from Fort St. Vrain 30 mi. to the east camp in Red Rocks on Boulder Creek in modern-day Settler's Park at the mouth of Boulder Canyon. This was in Arapaho territory, near the camp of Southern Arapaho chief Chief Niwot (Left Hand) (1825–64) in Valmont Butte. Chief Niwot rode to their camp to warn them to leave, but changed his mind after being given food and liquor. Boulder is a home rule city that is the county seat and most populous municipality of Boulder County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 108,250 at the 2020 United States census, making it the 12th most populous city in Colorado. Boulder is the principal city of the Boulder, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area and an important part of the Front Range Urban Corridor. Boulder Railroad Depot
Boulder Station is a hotel and casino located in Sunrise Manor, Nevada on Boulder Highway. It is owned and operated by Station Casinos. Groundbreaking began on August 5, 1993. The project was built at a cost of $103 million, and opened on August 23, 1994. An expansion in 1995 added a child-care facility, an 11-screen movie theater, and a video game arcade. A $50 million renovation took place in 2008, to compete against the new Eastside Cannery. A renovation of the hotel's 300 rooms was completed in 2011. Boulder Station's Railhead concert venue has earned several awards from the Academy of Country Music for its hosting of country performers. Hotel Boulderado
The Hotel Boulderado is located at 13th and Spruce St. in downtown Boulder, Colorado. It opened its doors on New Year's Day 1909. The original 1908 Otis Elevator is still in operation. As one of the first Boulder hotels, it is located in the heart of downtown. The hotel's name comes from the words "Boulder" and "Colorado" so no guest would forget where they had stayed. The hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hotel Boulderado is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Hotel Boulderado houses three restaurants. Located off of the main lobby are Spruce Farm and Fish, a fine-dining restaurant, and the Corner Bar, a more casual eatery. The University of Colorado Museum of Natural History is a museum of natural history in Boulder, Colorado. With more than four million artifacts and specimens in the areas of anthropology, botany, entomology, paleontology and zoology, the museum houses one of the most extensive and respected natural history collections in the Rocky Mountain and Plains regions, making it one of the top university natural science museums in the country. McKenzie Well
The McKenzie Well (also known as McKenzie #1) is an oil well site in Boulder, Colorado. The Boulder Oil Field was discovered on this site in 1901, making it the oldest oil-producing site in the entire Denver Basin, and one of the oldest in the western United States. The first producing well on the site was drilled in 1902. Peak production at 85,000 barrels was reached in 1909. A modern well (built in the 1960s) sits on the site of the original discovery; nothing remains of the original machinery. The Boulder Oil Field was an oil field, in the area of Boulder, Colorado. Some history Ute Indians were the first to discover oil, in Colorado. The McKenzie Well still stands, near Boulder, and Isaac Canfield found it in 1901, by dowsing, first producing oil, on February 5, 1902. The McKenzie Well was found, on the ranch or farm, of Neil McKenzie. It is highly unusual, extraordinary, that the original site of the discovery of Boulder Oil Field remained the last producing oil well. Of note, before the McKenzie Well was found, Florence oil driller Canfield noticed Boulder's topographic features resembled those of Florence; in Boulder area there were oil seeps, odors. The McKenzie Well was the first oil well sunk in what is now a vast oil and gas producing area, the Denver-Julesburg basin. Colorado Chautauqua
The Colorado Chautauqua, located in Boulder, Colorado, United States, and started in 1898, is the only Chautauqua west of the Mississippi River still continuing in unbroken operation since the heyday of the Chautauqua Movement in the 1920s. It is one of the few such continuously operating Chautauquas remaining in the United States, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006. According to its governing body, the Colorado Chautauqua Association, it is also unique in that it is the only year-round Chautauqua. Colorado & Southern Railway
The Colorado and Southern Railway was an American Class I railroad in the western United States that operated independently from 1898 to 1908, then as part of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad until it was absorbed into the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1981. The railway began as the consolidation of bankrupt railroads in 1898. The Colorado Central Railroad and Cheyenne and Northern Railway were brought together to form the Union Pacific, Denver and Gulf Railway in 1890. When Union Pacific went bankrupt in 1893 they were separated from the Union Pacific and united with the Denver, Leadville and Gunnison Railway and others, by Frank Trumbull to form the Colorado and Southern Railroad in 1898. The Chautauqua Auditorium is a wooden building constructed for the first season of the Colorado Chautauqua in 1898, and through the years has been a venue for many lectures, musical performances, and motion pictures both primitive and modern. Located at the Colorado Chautauqua in Boulder, Colorado, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It then stood "almost as it was built and as it was dedicated on July 4, 1898."
