Thornhill, Torfaen
Thornhill is a large council estate on the western side of Cwmbran, Torfaen in Wales. It is adjacent to the suburbs of Greenmeadow and Upper Cwmbran and represents the most economically-improved area of Cwmbran and in the wider Torfaen area. The estate is large and sprawling, built in the mid-1970s as temporary housing during the redevelopment of Pillgwenlly (Pill Newport). The residents liked the houses and never left. It is built around the original Thornhill farm house, which is still situated in the middle of the estate. The farm originally farmed pigs, and the woodland now surrounding the main estate has remains of the old walls and pig sties. Thornhill Community Academy is a coeducational secondary school with academy status situated just outside Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, England. The school is on the western side of Kirklees (Huddersfield) and near the M1 and the M62 motorways. Thornhill College is a Roman Catholic grammar school for girls. Located in Derry, Northern Ireland, it has a student population of approximately 1500 and a staff of 100 teachers. History The nucleus of the present Thornhill College commenced shortly after the Sisters of Mercy came to Derry in 1848. The Sisters started a private school for girls in Pump Street. John Nicholas Cassavetes (December 9, 1929 – February 3, 1989) was an American filmmaker and actor. He began as an actor in film and television before helping to pioneer modern American independent cinema as a writer and director, often self-financing, producing, and distributing his own films. Thornhill, also known as the Hade–Lewis House, is a plantation in Talladega County, Alabama, built beginning in 1835 by planter John Hardie. Hardie was an immigrant from Scotland, arriving in the Alabama Territory in 1818 after first spending time in New York and Virginia. He acquired the of land for Thornhill in 1834 or 1835. The topology of the land reminded Hardie of his father's Thorn Hill Farm in Kinross, Scotland, so he named the property Thornhill. Cotton was the primary crop grown at Thornhill with about 50 enslaved people being held at the plantation by Hardie. The property includes the Classical Revival house, a chapel, the servants' quarters, the plantation office, a barn, a horse racetrack and the family cemetery, along with the approach road.
