Thomas Yuen
Thomas C. K. Yuen (September 10, 1951 – February 13, 2022) was an American executive. A co-founder of AST Research, Yuen was one of the early proponents of the personal computer. Early life Yuen was born on September 10, 1951, in Yangzhou, China. His father was a housekeeper and chauffeur who took his family to Hong Kong to follow his employer. In 1970, Yuen immigrated to the United States and attended community college before transferring to U.C. Irvine to study electrical engineering. In 1974, he received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from UC Irvine’s Henry Samueli School of Engineering. Career In 1973, he was diagnosed with a kidney disease that would require costly treatment. At the time, Yuen was working as an engineer at Hughes Aircraft, earning a modest salary of $12,000 a year. AST Research
AST Research, Inc., later doing business as AST Computer, was a personal computer manufacturer. It was founded in 1980 in Irvine, California by Albert Wong, Safi Qureshey, and Thomas Yuen, as an initialism of their first names. In the 1980s, AST designed add-on expansion cards, and evolved toward the 1990s into a major personal computer manufacturer. AST was acquired by Samsung Electronics in 1997 but was ''de facto'' closed in 1999 due to a series of losses. Foundation (1979–1986) AST Research was founded as AST Associates by Thomas C. K. Yuen, Albert C. Wong, and Safi U. Qureshey. All three were immigrants to the United States—Yuen and Wong from Hong Kong and Qureshey from Pakistan. Hughes Aircraft
The Hughes Aircraft Company was a major American aerospace and defense contractor founded on February 14, 1934 by Howard Hughes in Glendale, California, as a division of Hughes Tool Company. The company was known for producing, among other products, the Hughes H-4 Hercules ''Spruce Goose'' aircraft, the atmospheric entry probe carried by the ''Galileo'' spacecraft, and the AIM-4 Falcon guided missile. Safi Qureshey
Safi Urrehman Qureshey is a Pakistani-American entrepreneur. He was the co-founder and CEO of AST Research, Inc., a personal computer manufacturer acquired by Samsung Electronics in 1997. Qureshey is involved with several start-up technology companies as an advisor, board member and seed investor. Qureshey currently serves as regent's professor at the University of California, Irvine's (UCI's) Graduate School of Management, and also actively supports U.C. Irvine's Bonney Center for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory. Qureshey graduated from The University of Texas at Arlington in 1975 as a Computer Science Major.
