Thomas Turner (dean Of Canterbury)
Thomas Turner (1591 – 8 October 1672) was an English royalist churchman and Dean of Canterbury. Life Turner was born at Reading, Berkshire in 1591, the son of Thomas Turner of Heckfield in Hampshire, mayor of Reading. He matriculated at St. John's College, Oxford, on 26 June 1610, graduating B.A. on 6 June 1614 and M.A. on 9 May 1618. He was elected a fellow, took the degree of B.D. on 20 July 1624, and was created D.D. on 1 April 1633. In 1623 he was presented by his college to the vicarage of St Giles' Church, Oxford, which he held with his fellowship, but relinquished in 1629. William Laud, when Bishop of London, made him his chaplain. On 7 January 1628 Turner was appointed a member of the commission for ecclesiastical causes; and on 14 April 1629 Laud collated him to the prebend of Newington in St. Paul's Cathedral. Thomas Wyatt Turner
Thomas Wyatt Turner (March 16, 1877 – April 21, 1978) was an American civil rights activist, biologist, and educator. He was the first Black American to receive a Ph.D. in botany, and helped found both the NAACP and the Federated Colored Catholics. Biography Early life and education Turner was born in Hughesville, Maryland. His parents, Eli and Linnie (née Gross), were sharecroppers and he was the fifth of their nine children. When he was eight, his father died and he was sent to live with an aunt and uncle, James Henry and Rose Turner. Turner worked in the fields but also attended Episcopal local schools from 1892 onwards after Catholic schools refused to admit him because of his race. From 1895 to 1897, he attended the Howard University Preparatory School. He studied at Howard University gaining B. S. (1901) and M. A. (1905) degrees. Thomas Price Turner
Thomas Price Turner (bapt. 17 January 1790 – 18 February 1868) was an English classical musician, and was one of the artist J. M. W. Turner's first cousins.The Great Artists: JMW Turner R.A. William Cosmo Monkhouse 1879 Following the artist's death in 1851, Thomas Price Turner was one of a group of interested parties who contested J. M. W. Turner's will. The first cousins were awarded part of Turner's legacy in 1856. Turner was a professor of music in his native Exeter and was a secondary at Exeter Cathedral from 1820 until 1857. He had his own band. He sang in the 1834 Handel Commemoration in London, as J. M. W. Turner noted on looking at the programme. Two years later Turner's daughter Maria Harriet married a London builder and surveyor, whom she later deserted for another husband. Thomas Hudson Turner
Thomas Hudson Turner (1815–1852) was an English archaeologist and architectural historian, born in London of Northumbrian extraction. He was educated at Mr Law's school in Chelsea and then apprenticed as a printer. His great interest in literature and antiquities led to his appointment in the Record office of the Tower of London. He is best remembered for his work ''Some Account of Domestic Architecture in England: from the Conquest to the End of the Thirteenth Century'' published in Oxford/London in 1851 and completed by John Henry Parker after his death. He died prematurely aged just 37, his health having suffered as a result of his arduous studies, and was buried on the western side of Highgate Cemetery. His grave (plot no.4455) no longer has a headstone or readable memorial. Thomas Turner (surgeon)
Thomas Turner, FRCS, FLS, (13 August 1793 – 17 December 1873) was an English surgeon known primarily for his involvement in developing medical education outside its then traditional base of London. He established a medical school in Manchester and was both a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Linnean Society of London. Early life The youngest child of Edmund Turner, a banker of Truro, and Joanna his wife, daughter of Richard Ferris, he was born there on 13 August 1793. He was educated at Truro grammar school under its headmaster Cornelius Cardew, and was then apprenticed to Nehemiah Duck, one of the surgeons to St Peter's Hospital, Bristol. Turner left Bristol at the end of his apprenticeship for London, where, in the autumn of 1815, he entered as a student under Astley Paston Cooper, at the united borough hospitals of Guy and St. Thomas. Thomas Turner (1749 – February 1809) was an English potter. He was the lessee of the celebrated Salopian porcelain company, or Caughley manufactory, during the later decades of the 18th century. He is not to be confused with the potter Turner (potters), John Turner (1737-1787) and his family, of Longport, Staffordshire, Lane End, Staffordshire, who were active in the same period. Thomas Turner (September, 1645 – 29 April 1714) was an English churchman and academic, Archdeacon of Essex and President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Life The second son of Thomas Turner (dean), Thomas Turner, Dean of Canterbury, he was born at Bristol on 19 or 20 September 1645; he was a younger brother of Francis Turner (bishop), Francis Turner. Thomas originally matriculated at Hart Hall on 10 May 1662, but on 6 October 1663 he was admitted to a Gloucestershire scholarship at Corpus, of which he became fellow in 1672. He graduated B.A. on 15 March 1666, M.A. in 1669, B.D. in 1677, and D.D. in 1683. Thomas Turner (naval Officer)
Thomas Turner (23 December 1807 – 24 March 1883) was a United States Navy rear admiral. He served as commander of the Pacific Squadron from 1869 to 1870. Turner fought in the Mexican–American War and, though a Virginian, served in the Union Navy during the American Civil War. Biography Turner was born at the Marengo plantation in King George County, Virginia in 1807 and raised at the Kinloch plantation in Fauquier County. He was appointed to the U.S. Navy as a midshipman on 21 April 1825. Turner received his training at sea attached to the Mediterranean Squadron, joining the frigate in 1827 and the sloop-of-war in 1830. He became a passed midshipman on 4 June 1831. Remaining with the Mediterranean Squadron, Turner rejoined the ''Constellation'' in 1834 and then was reassigned to the frigate in 1835. He was promoted to lieutenant on 22 December 1835. Thomas B. Turner (1902 – September 22, 2002) was an American microbiologist who worked as the dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine from 1957 to 1968.
