Thomas Shelton (''fl.'' 1604–1620) was a translator of ''Don Quixote'' from Spanish into English. Shelton's translation of the first part of the novel was published in London in 1612. It was the first translation of ''Don Quixote'' into any language. Shelton published his complete translation of the novel in 1620. Life Shelton was a Roman Catholic from Dublin. He may have been educated in Spain, where a "Thomas Shelton, Dublinensis" was listed as a student in Salamanca. Shelton's activities in Ireland brought him to the attention of the English intelligence service. He seems to have been employed in carrying letters to persons in England from Lord Deputy Fitzwilliam at Dublin Castle. However, evidence emerged that he was hostile to the English crown: a letter was intercepted in which he offered his services to Florence MacCarthy, who was seeking to arrange a military intervention by the king of Spain—the Spanish sent an expedition to Kinsale, Ireland in 1601. Thomas Shelton (1600/01–1650(?)) was an English stenography, stenographer and the inventor of a much-used British 17th- and 18th-century stenography. Life The 1647 edition of Thomas Shelton's ''Tachygraphie'' contains a portrait giving his age as 46, implying that he was born in 1600/01. Nothing sure is known about his origin and education, but it was supposed that he came from the well-known Shelton family which owned much land in Norfolk. In the English Civil War (1642–49), Shelton stood on the side of the Parliament of England, Parliament; his religious sympathies were for Puritanism. Thomas Shelton made his living from shorthand, teaching the subject in London over a period of thirty years while he developed his stenographical systems. Shelton knew the stenography of John Willis (stenographer), John Willis and took over its geometrical basic principle for his own shorthand. Thomas Shelton, the great nephew of B.F. Shelton is a southern gospel musician currently living in Zanesville, Ohio. Shelton was born on April 28, 1958, in Richmond, Indiana, to Winston and Nellie Shelton and was raised in a devout Christian home. He began performing as a Christian musician about 1977, when he was listed in "Who's Who in Musician America." In June 1977 Shelton became a member of the touring group General Delivery U.S.A.
