Thomas Huston Macbride
Thomas Huston Macbride (July 31, 1848 – March 27, 1934) was the tenth president of the University of Iowa, serving from 1914 to 1916. Macbride was a naturalist and botanist, Macbride Hall at the University of Iowa is named for him. He often collaborated with Samuel Calvin. He was the 75th member of the Acacia chapter at the University of Iowa. In 1909, botanist Fred Jay Seaver published ''Macbridella'' a genus of (in fungi family of Melanommataceae), and named in his honour. Then in 1934, botanist Henry Clark Gilbert in the journal of Univ. Iowa Stud. Nat. Hist. circumscribed the genus of Amoebozoa (from the family Stemonitidaceae), ''Macbrideola ''Macbrideola'' is a genus of Amoebozoa in the family Stemonitidaceae. Amoebozoa
Amoebozoa is a major taxonomic group containing about 2,400 described species of amoeboid protists, often possessing blunt, fingerlike, lobose pseudopods and tubular mitochondrial cristae. In traditional and currently no longer supported classification schemes, Amoebozoa is ranked as a phylum within either the kingdom Protista or the kingdom Protozoa. In the classification favored by the International Society of Protistologists, it is retained as an unranked " supergroup" within Eukaryota. Molecular genetic analysis supports Amoebozoa as a monophyletic clade. Modern studies of eukaryotic phylogenetic trees identify it as the sister group to Opisthokonta, another major clade which contains both fungi and animals as well as several other clades comprising some 300 species of unicellular eukaryotes. Walter Albert Jessup
Walter Albert Jessup (August 12, 1877 – July 5, 1944) was an American academic administrator. He served as the eleventh President of the University of Iowa from 1916 to 1934. Early life Jessup was born on August 12, 1877, in Richmond, Indiana. He graduated from Earlham College, Hanover College and Columbia University. He was the 28th initiate of the Iowa Gamma chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Career Jessup was the school superintendent in Westfield, Indiana and Madison, Indiana. Jessup served as the dean of the Indiana University School of Education, and as the eleventh President of the University of Iowa from 1916 to 1934. Jessup was the president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Death and legacy Jessup resided in New York City. John Gabbert Bowman
John Gabbert Bowman (May 18, 1877 – December 2, 1962) was the tenth Chancellor (1921–1945) of the University of Pittsburgh and the ninth President (1911–1914) of the University of Iowa. He is best known for initiating and completing the 42-story Cathedral of Learning, the centerpiece of Pitt's campus, over the objections of many faculty and community members. At the time, it was the tallest educational structure in the world. He also established the University of Pittsburgh Press and oversaw the institution of controversial athletic policies that resulted in the resignation in popular head football coach Jock Sutherland. Circumscription (taxonomy)
In biological taxonomy, circumscription is the content of a taxon, that is, the delimitation of which subordinate taxa are parts of that taxon. If we determine that species X, Y, and Z belong in Genus A, and species T, U, V, and W belong in Genus B, those are our circumscriptions of those two genera. Another systematist might determine that T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z all belong in genus A. Agreement on circumscriptions is not governed by the Codes of Zoological or Botanical Nomenclature, and must be reached by scientific consensus. A goal of biological taxonomy is to achieve a stable circumscription for every taxon. This goal conflicts, at times, with the goal of achieving a natural classification that reflects the evolutionary history of divergence of groups of organisms.
