Thomas Garrett (1789–1871) was an American abolitionist and leader in the Underground Railroad movement before the American Civil War. Thomas Garrett
Thomas Garrett (August 21, 1789 – January 25, 1871) was an American abolitionist and assisted in the Underground Railroad movement before the American Civil War. He helped more than 2,500 African Americans escape slavery. For his efforts, he was threatened, harassed, and assaulted. A $10,000 () bounty was established for his capture. He was arrested and convicted for helping Emeline and Samuel Hawkins escape slavery. Personal life Garrett was born on August 21, 1789, in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania, outside Philadelphia, (as per Darby Monthly Meeting records; Births & Burials 1682-1835 frame 23) to Sarah Price and Thomas Garrett. The family were members of the Quaker Darby Friends Meeting. His family lived on their homestead called Riverview Farm. In 1813, Garrett married Mary Sharpless, with whom he had five children. Thomas Garrett (Australian Politician)
Thomas Garrett (16 July 183025 November 1891) was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, newspaper proprietor and land agent. Early life Garrett was born in Liverpool, England to John Garrett and Sarah, and went to New South Wales with his parents when nine years of age. A year later he was bound to the printing business, but during his apprenticeship he ran away, and became a cabin-boy on H.M.S. ''Fly'', then employed in resurveying the coast between Port Jackson and Hobson's Bay. The youth was soon sent back, and having finished his apprenticeship, he was engaged on a number of newspapers, subsequently being employed in the Government printing office, where he worked for three years. Mr. Garrett then turned his attention to journalism, and in 1855 established the ''Illawarra Mercury'', and afterwards also the ''Alpine Pioneer'' and the '' Manaro Mercury''. Tom Garrett (cricketer)
Thomas William Garrett (26 July 1858 – 6 August 1943) was an early Australian Test cricketer and, later, a distinguished public servant. Early life Tom Garrett was the second son of a Thomas Garrett (Australian politician), newspaper proprietor and politician who bore the same name. His mother, Mary Ann Creagan, was his father's first wife. Garrett was educated at Newington College (1867–1872), while the school was still at Newington House, in the Sydney suburb of Silverwater, New South Wales, Silverwater. His ability as a cricketer and sprinter was encouraged by the assistant master Joseph Coates. Public service career In 1873 he matriculated to the University of Sydney and attended lectures for several terms. Thomas Garrett (bishop)
Thomas Samuel Garrett (died 10 April 1980) was an Anglican bishop in the Church of South India: he was the Bishop in Tirunelveli from 1971 to 1974. Garrett attended Christ's College, Cambridge and trained for the ministry at Ridley Hall. He was made deacon in Advent 1937 (19 December) and ordained priest the following Advent (18 December 1938) — both times by Arthur Winnington-Ingram, Bishop of London, at St Paul's Cathedral. He then served his title (curacy) at St Mary, Stoke Newington. He spent 34 years serving with the Church Mission Society; a theological educator, he was Vice-Principal of Tirumaraiyur, 1946–1963. He was also an academic in western Africa, holding a lectureship at the University of Nigeria. Tommy Garrett (footballer)
Thomas Garrett (28 February 1926 – 16 April 2006) was an English professional footballer. He represented his country on three occasions. Career Garrett was a miner playing for Horden Colliery when Blackpool signed him as a 16-year-old in 1942, initially as a forward. It was as a full-back, however, that he established himself – and as a "footballing" defender, who preferred to pass his way out of trouble rather than kicking it downfield. He also spent hours practising heading the ball. Garrett made his debut for the Seasiders on 29 March 1948, in a single-goal defeat at Derby County. He did not become a regular in the side until Ron Suart left for Blackburn Rovers in 1949. The 1950s are the most successful decade in Blackpool's history to date. Snuff Garrett
Thomas Lesslie Garrett (July 5, 1938 – December 16, 2015) known as Snuff Garrett or Tommy Garrett, was an American record producer whose most famous work was during the 1960s and 1970s. Early years Garrett was born in Dallas, Texas, United States, and attended South Oak Cliff High School, dropping out in the 10th grade. In 1976, he returned to Dallas to receive a special high school diploma that conferred an "honorary music degree." Biography At seventeen, Garrett was a disc jockey in Lubbock, Texas, where he met Buddy Holly. He is often still mentioned on the Lubbock oldies station KDAV on a program hosted by his friend Jerry "Bo" Coleman. Garrett also worked in radio in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he performed on-air stunts. Tommy Garrett (born June 4, 1954) is a politician from the U.S. state of Nebraska. In 2013, he was appointed to fill a vacancy in the unicameral Nebraska Legislature, representing a district in Sarpy County, in the Omaha metropolitan area. Garrett is a member of the Republican Party. In Nebraska, the legislature is non-partisan. Early life and career Garrett was born at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi.
