Thomas B. Smith (conservation Biologist)
Thomas Bates Smith is an American evolutionary and conservation biologist. His research focuses on rainforest biodiversity, species evolution in human-altered environments, the ecology of animal and human diseases, wildlife trafficking, migratory bird conservation, and the development of new approaches for mitigating the impacts of climate change. Education and career Smith received his BS and MS degrees at the University of Wisconsin Madison and his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. He joined San Francisco State University as an assistant professor in 1992 and became a full professor in 1999. In 2002 Smith moved to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he is a distinguished professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. Congo Basin
The Congo Basin () is the sedimentary basin of the Congo River. The Congo Basin is located in Central Africa, in a region known as west equatorial Africa. The Congo Basin region is sometimes known simply as the Congo. It contains some of the largest tropical rainforests in the world and is an important source of water used in agriculture and energy generation. The rainforest in the Congo Basin is the largest rainforest in Africa and second only to the Amazon rainforest in size, with 300 million hectares compared to the 800 million hectares in the Amazon. Because of its size and diversity the basin's forest is important for mitigating climate change in its role as a carbon sink. Elliott Ladd Coues (; September 9, 1842 – December 25, 1899) was an American army surgeon, historian, ornithologist, and author. He led surveys of the Arizona Territory, and later as secretary of the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. He founded the American Ornithological Union in 1883, and was editor of its publication, '' The Auk''. Biography Coues was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Samuel Elliott Coues and Charlotte Haven Ladd Coues. He graduated at Columbian University, Washington, D.C., in 1861, and at the medical school of that institution in 1863. He served as a medical cadet in Washington in 1862–1863, and in 1864 was appointed assistant-surgeon in the regular army, and assigned to Fort Whipple, Arizona.
