Thomas Ashe
Thomas Patrick Ashe (; 12 January 1885 – 25 September 1917) was an Irish revolutionary and politician. He was a member of the Gaelic League, the Gaelic Athletic Association, the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) and a founding member of the Irish Volunteers. He was a senior commander in the Easter Rising of 1916. After release from prison just over a year later he was soon re-arrested on separate charges of sedition, and died as a result of forcible feeding whilst on hunger strike in prison. Background Thomas Ashe was born in the townland of Kinard East, Lispole, Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland, to Gregory Ashe (d. 1927), a farmer, and his wife Ellen Hanifin, on 12 January 1885, according to his baptismal record and his sister Nora, or 15 March 1885, according to state birth records. Thomas Ashe (1836–1889) was an English poet. Life He was born in Stockport, Cheshire in 1836. His father, John Ashe (d. 1879), originally a Manchester manufacturer and an amateur artist, resolved late in life to take holy orders, was prepared for ordination by his own son, and became vicar of St. Paul's at Crewe in 1869. Thomas was educated at Stockport Grammar School and St. John's College, Cambridge, where he entered as a sizar in 1855 and graduated B.A. as senior optime in 1859. He took up scholastic work in Peterborough, was ordained deacon in 1859 and priest in 1860; at Easter 1860 he became curate of Silverstone, Northamptonshire. But clerical work proved distasteful, and he gave himself entirely to schoolmastering. In 1865 he became mathematical and modern form master at Leamington College, whence he moved to a similar post at Queen Elizabeth's School, Ipswich. Thomas Ashe (writer)
Thomas Ashe (1770–1835) was an Irish novelist and miscellaneous writer. Biography Ashe was the third son of a half-pay officer, and was born at Glasnevin, near Dublin, 15 July 1770. He received a commission in the 83rd regiment of foot, which, however, was almost immediately afterwards disbanded; and he was sent to a counting-house at Bordeaux. There he suffered a short imprisonment for wounding in a duel a gentleman whose sister he had seduced, but, the wound not proving fatal, the prosecution was not persisted in. Returning to Dublin, Ashe was appointed secretary to the Diocesan and Endowed Schools Commission, but, getting into debt, resigned his office and retired to Switzerland. He then spent several years in foreign travel, living, according to his own account,Memoirs and Confessions, 3 vols. 1815 in a free and unconstrained fashion, and experiencing a somewhat chequered fortune. Thomas Samuel Ashe (July 21, 1812 – February 4, 1887) was an American lawyer and politician who served in the Confederate Congress, and U.S. Congressman from North Carolina. Early years Born in Hawfields, Orange County, North Carolina, he attended Bingham's Academy in Hillsborough, then the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in 1832. He was admitted to the bar in 1834 and began to practice law in Wadesboro, North Carolina in 1835. Ashe owned slaves, with former slave of his Evelina Morgan (Dargan) sharing her Account of what life was like on the plantation when the Yankees had invaded his home while he fled. The title of the book is “Slave Narratives: a folk history of slavery in the United States from interviews with former slaves, volume two, Arkansas natives part five”. Tom Ashe
Thomas Michael Ashe (1927 – 19 October 2016) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played at club level with Dingle and at inter-county level with the Kerry senior football team. He usually lined out as a forward. Career Ashe first came to Gaelic football prominence as a member of the Dingle club, with whom he won a County Championship title in 1948. He first appeared on the inter-county scene during a two-year stint with the Kerry minor football team and won an All-Ireland Minor Championship title in 1946. Ashe was drafted onto the Kerry senior football team in 1948, however, he later spent a brief spell in goal for the Celtic reserve team in Glasgow but never played with the first team. After returning to Ireland he resumed his position on the Kerry team and won two Munster Championship titles in three seasons as well as an All-Ireland Championship title in 1953.
