Thismia Kobensis
''Thismia kobensis'' is a species of flowering plant from the ''Thismia'' genus in the myco-heterotrophic family Burmanniaceae. The type and originally only specimen was discovered in Kobe, Japan, in 1992, and preserved without identification, although it was originally assigned to the genus '' Oxygyne''. No new specimens were found in follow-up surveys between 1993 and 1999, and the plant's original habitat was destroyed by land development in 1999. ''T. kobensis'' was declared extinct in 2010 due to habitat loss and deforestation. It was described as a species of ''Thismia'' in 2018. In 2021 the plant was rediscovered some 30 km away from the original location. 20 specimens were found in a conifer plantation. News of the rediscovery was published in 2023. William Griffith (botanist)
William Griffith (4 March 1810 – 9 February 1845) was a British doctor, naturalist, and botanist. Griffith's botanical publications are from India and Burma. After a brief stay in Madras, he was assigned as a Civil Surgeon to Tenasserim, Burma, where he studied local plants and made collecting trips to the Barak River valley in Assam. He explored various parts of Burma, traveling the rivers, including the Irrawadi as far as Rangoon. He visited the highlands of Sikkim, and the region of the Himalayas around Shimla. Burmanniaceae is a family of flowering plants, consisting of 99 species of herbaceous plants in eight genera. Description These plants are annual or perennial herbs, with generally unbranched stems, some lacking leaves. Some members of this family lack chlorophyll and are mycotrophic (also called myco-heterotrophic). The family tends to be saprophytic and even the autotrophic species are all endomycorrhizal and probably at least hemisaprophytic.
