''This Way'' is an album by Acoustic Alchemy, released on 14 May 2007 in the United Kingdom. It was released on 6 June 2007 in the United States. The album was their first to be released on Narada Jazz. On 4 February 2007, Acoustic Alchemy announced that they had completed recording the new album, comprising eleven tracks. Acoustic Alchemy
Acoustic Alchemy is an English smooth jazz band formed in England in the early 1980s by Nick Webb (musician), Nick Webb and Simon James (musician), Simon James. 1981–1989: Early days Acoustic Alchemy was formed around the acoustic guitars of Simon James (classical guitar, nylon string) and Nick Webb (Steel-string acoustic guitar, steel string), often backed up by double bass, percussion, and string quartet the Violettes. The band made two albums that were unprofitable. In the mid-1980s, James left, and in the 1990s he formed Kymaera, a similar, though more Latin music (genre), Latin oriented band. In 1985, Webb discovered Greg Carmichael, a guitarist with a London pub band called the Holloways (not affiliated with the indie band of the same name), who became James' successor. Smooth Jazz
Smooth jazz is commercially oriented crossover jazz music. Although often described as a "genre", it is a debatable and highly controversial subject in jazz music circles. As a radio format, however, smooth jazz radio became the successor to easy listening music on radio station programming from the mid-1970s through the early 1990s. History Smooth jazz may be thought of as commercially-oriented, crossover jazz which came to prominence in the 1980s, displacing the more venturesome jazz fusion from which it emerged. It avoids the improvisational "risk-taking" of jazz fusion, emphasizing melodic form, and much of the music was initially "a combination of jazz with easy-listening pop music and lightweight R&B." Narada Productions
Narada is a record label formed in 1983 as an independent new-age music label and distributed by MCA. From 1997–2013, the label was owned by Virgin Records on behalf of EMI. Since 2013, it is a fully owned subsidiary of Universal Music Group and distributed by Capitol Music Group's Blue Note Records. The label evolved through an expansion of formats to include world music, electronica, jazz, Celtic music, new flamenco, acoustic guitar, and piano releases. Label history In 1979, John Morey started a mail-order business to sell new-age music. American/English is Acoustic Alchemy's fourth album release on the Higher Octave Music label, and contains eleven tracks, making it also their shortest album with the label to date. The album was preceded by single "Say Yeah" for smooth jazz radio in the USA, an offering in a hip-hop style, remarked by some to be similar in style to British urban singer-songwriter Craig David. Experimental attributes include digital processing on Carmichael's guitar, which 'cut off' the ends of each note, and scat style vocals from Gilderdale toward the end of the track. Other highlights include "The Detroit Shuffle", reminiscent of 1989's "Catalina Kiss" from the "Blue Chip" album. The track fused a vibrant melody with the shuffle rhythm which helped seal the band's popularity in the genre towards the end of the 1980s. Rick Braun
Rick Braun (born July 6, 1955) is an American smooth jazz trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone and keyboards player, vocalist, composer, and record producer. Early life and education Braun was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania and attended Dieruff High School. His mother was a self-taught pianist and banjoist. Braun played drums at Dieruff High School, and followed his brother in playing trumpet. In the 1970s, while attending the Eastman School of Music, he became a member of a jazz-fusion band, Auracle, along with, amongst others, keyboards player John Serry, saxophone and flute player Steve Kujala and vibes player Steve Rehbein (later Steve Raybine). The band worked with producer Teo Macero and Braun co-produced the second album City Slickers (minus John Serry and Steve Kujala). Jeff Kashiwa
Jeff Kashiwa is an American saxophonist with the smooth jazz band the Rippingtons and one of three with the Sax Pack, as well as having recorded several albums under his own name. Life and career Jeff Kashiwa was born in 1963 in Louisville, Kentucky but moved to Seattle, Washington as a young child. He credits the public school's music program for inspiring his interest in music, along with his father, who died in 1992, who was a fan of jazz music including Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. While attending school, his father gave him an old silver clarinet but, when he later saw a row of saxophones at school, Kashiwa knew he had found the instrument for him. As a local gig musician working small jobs, Kashiwa wanted a more permanent position in a band and, after searching for some time without success, he approached bassist Steve Bailey of the Rippingtons, of whom he was a fan, and hired Bailey to play along with him. Down To The Bone (band)
Down to the Bone is an acid jazz group led by British DJ Stuart Wade, who formed the band in 1996 with Chris Morgans (who later left). The group was popular in the UK, where it is "hailed as the kings of UK jazz groove." The band's music is a mix of funk and jazz.
