This Summer (Squeeze Song)
"This Summer" is a song by Squeeze released as the first single from their eleventh album, ''Ridiculous''. Two versions of the single were released, each with entirely different B-sides. Disc 1 contained a live cover of Britpop group Blur's song "End of a Century". The single peaked at number 36 in the UK Singles Chart in September 1995. A remix reached number 32 in the UK Chart in August 1996. Squeeze (band)
Squeeze are an English rock band that came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the new wave period of the late 1970s, and continued recording in the 1980s, 1990s and 2010s. In the UK, their singles " Cool for Cats", " Up the Junction", and "Labelled with Love" were top-ten chart hits; "Pulling Mussels" only made it to 44 in the UK charts. Though not as commercially successful in the United States, Squeeze had American hits with " Tempted", "Black Coffee in Bed", and " Hourglass", and were considered a part of the Second British Invasion. The vast majority of their material is composed of lyrics by Chris Difford and music by Glenn Tilbrook, who are guitarists and vocalists in the band. The duo were hailed as "the heirs to Lennon and McCartney's throne" during the band's initial popularity in the late 1970s. The group formed in Deptford, London, in 1974, and first broke up in 1982. ''British Hit Singles & Albums'' (originally known as ''The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles'' and ''The Guinness Book of British Hit Albums'') was a music reference book originally published in the United Kingdom by the publishing arm of the Guinness breweries, Guinness Superlatives. Later editions were published by HiT Entertainment (who had bought the Guinness World Records brand). It listed all the singles and albums featured in the Top 75 pop charts in the UK. In 2004 the book became an amalgamation of two earlier Guinness publications, originally known as ''British Hit Singles'' and ''British Hit Albums''. The publication of this amalgamation ceased in 2006, with Guinness World Records being sold to The Jim Pattison Group, owner of ''Ripley's Believe It or Not!''. Black Coffee In Bed
"Black Coffee in Bed" was the first single released from Squeeze's fifth album, ''Sweets from a Stranger''. It peaked at number 51 in the UK Singles Chart in April 1982. Background Chris Difford stated, " e lyric was inspired by my picking up my notebook one day and seeing a coffee stain on it, which inspired the first line. It was a very vivid image for me and inspired this song of loss and regret." Difford also said that "lyrically it was attractive to countrykind of metre. The fact that Glenn put a soul melody to it shows the unique quality of our writing." A music video, which Difford said showed the band "look ngtotally out of place and not credible at all," was directed by Steve Barron (notable for directing Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" video.) The video for the song implies that Chris Difford played the guitar solo, when it was in fact performed by Glenn Tilbrook. "Up the Junction" was the third single released from Squeeze's second album, '' Cool for Cats'', sung by Glenn Tilbrook. It is one of the band's most popular and well-remembered songs (especially in the UK), and reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart, the same position as its predecessor, " Cool for Cats". History '' Up the Junction'' is also the name of a collection of short stories by Nell Dunn, first published in 1963. Lyricist Chris Difford said that the title phrase was lifted from the 1965 TV play version of the work, directed by Ken Loach, and the subsequent 1968 movie version. The film had a soundtrack by Manfred Mann, and a song by them, also called ''Up the Junction''. The song features a rare lead vocal performance from cockney-accented Squeeze lyricist Chris Difford, one of the only two occasions he sang lead on a Squeeze single A-side (the other was 1989's " Love Circles"). "Heaven Knows" is a song by Squeeze, released as the third single from their eleventh album, ''Ridiculous''. The single version differs significantly from the original album mix, as most of Chris Difford's vocals have been erased and replaced by new vocals from Glenn Tilbrook. The single reached number 27 in the UK Singles Chart. Three versions of the single were released, each with a different set of live B-sides. The live tracks are the same as those found on the ''Live at the Royal Albert Hall'' CD released in 1997.
