''Thief's Challenge'' is an adventure for the 2nd edition of the ''Dungeons & Dragons, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game, published in 1993. Contents The Thief's Challenge is a single player module for Rogue (Dungeons & Dragons), thief characters that are between levels 1 and 4. Publication history The module was written by Troy Christensen and published by TSR, Inc., TSR. Reception John Setzer reviewed ''Thief's Challenge'' in a 1994 issue of ''White Wolf (magazine), White Wolf''. On a scale of 1 to 5, he rated the module a 3 for Appearance, Concepts, Complexity, and Playability and a 2 for Value. He stated, "With a down-to-earth plot and little powerful magic, Thief’s Challenge provides an entertaining, everyday human adventure," while adding that "Extensive unused space and fairly large type make this module seem incomplete. The rogue, formerly known as the thief, is one of the standard playable character classes in most editions of the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game. A rogue is a versatile character, capable of sneaky combat and nimble tricks. The rogue is stealthy and dexterous, and in early editions was the only official base class from the '' Player's Handbook'' capable of finding and disarming traps and picking locks. Troy Christensen
Troy Christensen (born July 16, 1964) is an American author and game designer. Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he is an established figure in the role-playing game community. Biography Troy Christensen created the ''Phantasm Adventures'' game, and the first edition was published in 1982. In 1987 he rewrote the game as ''Phantasm Adventures II''. '' Advanced Phantasm Adventures'' was released in 1988, and was described by ''Dragon'' as a rich and complicated fantasy role-playing game system. The rules was first printed as an independent publication, just as ''Dungeons & Dragons'' was reaching the height in American popularity in the late 1980s. TSR, Inc
TSR, Inc. was an American game publishing company, best known as the original publisher of ''Dungeons & Dragons'' (''D&D''). Its earliest incarnation, Tactical Studies Rules, was founded in October 1973 by Gary Gygax and Don Kaye. Gygax had been unable to find a publisher for ''D&D'', a new type of game he and Dave Arneson were co-developing, so he founded the new company with Kaye to self-publish their products. Needing financing to bring their new game to market, Gygax and Kaye brought in Brian Blume in December as an equal partner. ''Dungeons & Dragons'' is generally considered the first tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG), and established the genre. ''White Wolf'' was a game magazine, published by White Wolf Publishing from 1986 to 1995. History While still in high school, Stewart Wieck and Steve Wieck decided to self-publish their own magazine, and Steve chose the name "White Wolf" after Elric of Melniboné; ''White Wolf'' #1 was published by their White Wolf Publishing in August 1986 and distributors began to order the magazine a few issues later as its print runs continued to increase. A dungeon is a room or cell in which prisoners are held, especially underground. Dungeons are generally associated with medieval castles, though their association with torture probably derives more from the Renaissance period. An oubliette (from the French , meaning 'to forget') or bottle dungeon is a basement room which is accessible only from a hatch or hole (an '' angstloch'') in a high ceiling. Etymology The word ''dungeon'' comes from French ''donjon'' (also spelled ''dongeon''), which means "keep", the main tower of a castle. The first recorded instance of the word in English was near the beginning of the 14th century when it held the same meaning as ''donjon''. The earlier meaning of "keep" is still in use for academics, although in popular culture, it has come to mean a cell or "oubliette".
