''There is a Song'' is the seventh album from The Free Design, released in 1972. After feeling that they had reached a dead end with their albums on the Project 3 label, they left to record for a smaller label in upstate New York called Ambrotype. The album also coincided with Chris Dedrick's move from Maryland to Toronto, where he and his sisters, who comprised the rest of the group, were mentored by Canadian musician and philosopher Kenneth G. Mills. Some tracks were recorded in Rochester and some in Toronto. It was the last album the group recorded until Cosmic Peekaboo nearly 30 years later, and was extremely rare until its reissue on CD by Light in the Attic Records Light in the Attic Records is an independent record label that was established in 2002 in Seattle, Washington (state), Washington by Matt Sullivan. The Free Design
The Free Design was a Delevan, New York-based vocal group, whose music can be described as sunshine pop and baroque pop. Though they did not achieve much commercial recognition during their main recording career, their work later influenced bands including Stereolab, Cornelius, Pizzicato Five, Beck and The High Llamas. Early life and career The members were all members of the Dedrick family: Chris Dedrick (12 September 1947 – 6 August 2010), sister Sandy and brother Bruce were the original lineup. Chris Dedrick wrote most of the songs. Younger sister Ellen joined the group later, and youngest sister Stefanie (1952–1999) joined near the end of their initial career. Their father, Art, was a trombonist and music arranger. Their uncle Rusty Dedrick was a jazz trumpeter with Claude Thornhill and Red Norvo. They formed the band while living in New York City. Sunshine Pop
Sunshine pop (originally known as soft pop) is a subgenre of pop music that originated in Southern California in the mid-1960s. Rooted in easy listening and advertising jingles, sunshine pop acts combined nostalgic or anxious moods with "an appreciation for the beauty of the world". It largely consisted of lesser-known artists who imitated more popular groups such as the Mamas & the Papas and the 5th Dimension. While the Beach Boys are noted as prominent influences, the band's own music was rarely representative of the genre. Sunshine pop enjoyed mainstream success in the latter half of the decade, with many of its top 40 hits peaking in the spring and summer of 1967, especially just before the Summer of Love. Popular acts include the Turtles, and the Association. Baroque Pop
Baroque pop (sometimes called baroque rock) is a fusion genre that combines rock music with particular elements of classical music. It emerged in the mid 1960s as artists pursued a majestic, orchestral sound and is identifiable for its appropriation of Baroque compositional styles ( contrapuntal melodies and functional harmony patterns) and dramatic or melancholic gestures. Harpsichords figure prominently, while oboes, French horns, and string quartets are also common. Although harpsichords had been deployed for a number of pop hits since the 1940s, starting in the 1960s, some record producers increasingly placed the instrument in the foreground of their arrangements. Ambrotype
The ambrotype (from grc, ἀμβροτός — “immortal”, and — “impression”) also known as a collodion positive in the UK, is a positive photograph on glass made by a variant of the wet plate collodion process. Like a print on paper, it is viewed by reflected light. Like the daguerreotype, which it replaced, and like the prints produced by a Polaroid camera, each is a unique original that could only be duplicated by using a camera to copy it. The ambrotype was introduced in the 1850s. During the 1860s it was superseded by the tintype, a similar photograph on thin black-lacquered iron, hard to distinguish from an ambrotype if under glass. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. Light in the Attic Records is an independent record label that was established in 2002 in Seattle, Washington (state), Washington by Matt Sullivan. The label is known for its roster of reissue projects and for its distribution catalog.
