In law, a witness is someone who, either voluntarily or under compulsion, provides testimonial evidence, either oral or written, of what they know or claim to know. A witness might be compelled to provide testimony in court, before a grand jury, before an administrative tribunal, before a deposition officer, or in a variety of other legal proceedings. A subpoena is a legal document that commands a person to appear at a proceeding. It is used to compel the testimony of a witness in a trial (law), trial. The Witness (1983 Video Game)
''The Witness'' is an interactive fiction video game published by Infocom in 1983. Like Infocom's earlier title '' Deadline'', it is a murder mystery. ''The Witness'' was written in the ZIL language for the Z-machine, which allowed it to be released simultaneously on many systems. It is Infocom's seventh game. Plot The game takes place in Cabeza Plana, a quiet and fictional (the name is Spanish for "Flathead", from ''Zork'' mythology) suburb of Los Angeles, California in February 1938. Freeman Linder, a local millionaire, has begged the police for protection from a man named Stiles. The player's character is a detective assigned one evening to check out the wealthy man's claims: is Linder seriously in danger or just another rich eccentric? ''Witness'' is the second studio album by American metalcore band Blessthefall. It was released on October 6, 2009, through Fearless Records. It is the band's first album with Beau Bokan on lead vocals and final album with original guitarist Mike Frisby. The album was co-produced with There for Tomorrow drummer, Christopher Kamrada. This album includes a post-metal entrance, "2.0", and some songs without any screams or death growls. The song "God Wears Gucci" was released in MySpace and the iTunes Store on Tuesday, August 10, 2009, and is the third song released off the album, along with "To Hell & Back" and "We'll Sleep When We're Dead", although these were demonstrations to the album versions. On September 9 the band uploaded a new track to Myspace: "What's Left of Me". The entire album was streaming on their MySpace page until October 6, 2009. ''Witness'' is the second studio album by American musician Benjamin Booker. It was released on 2 June 2017 by ATO Records and Rough Trade Records. Background ''Witness'' was announced with the premiere of its title track on March 9, 2017. Booker published an essay alongside the announcement, detailing the experience that led him towards writing the album's title track. The title track's references to police brutality and activism garnered Booker coverage in politically leaning outlets includinMic which noted the album's “urgent synthesis of blues, gospel and soul — forms with long histories of translating black pain into uplifting and enduring compositions … with a raw and unforgiving candor that's reminiscent of downtown New York punk. A Witness
A Witness are an English post-punk/indie rock band, who were originally active in the mid-1980s alternative music scene. Their first EP ''Loudhailer Songs'' and début album ''I am John's Pancreas'' brought them to the attention of BBC Radio 1 disc jockey John Peel, for whom they recorded four sessions. Their career was brought to a halt with the death of guitarist Rick Aitken in 1989. Founder member and songwriter Vince Hunt revived the band with a new line-up for a series of UK-wide dates in 2014 marking the 25th anniversary of Aitken's death, and the band continues to play live. Career A Witness were formed in 1982 in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England, by Rick Aitken (guitar), Vince Hunt (bass) and a drum machine, in 1986 replaced by Alan Brown (ex- Big Flame). Witness were a British alternative rock band formed in Wigan, Greater Manchester in 1997. The band released two albums via Island Records between 1999 and 2001, before splitting up in 2004. History Formation Singer-songwriter Gerard Starkie and guitarist Ray Chan first met at Wigan & Leigh College and spent their early years in and out of various local bands which didn't quite match the sound that they were both hoping for; most notably Gerard in ''Embryonic'' and Ray in ''Easter''. As a result, they eventually set about writing and recording a number of 4-track demos together, which were mixed by their friend Nick McCabe of The Verve. Witness was a contemporary gospel group from Detroit, Michigan. Often called the female version of Commissioned, an all-male contemporary gospel group, they were the brainchild of and chiefly produced by Michael A. Brooks, an original member and producer of Commissioned. History The group hailed from Detroit, Michigan, and was originally formed as a quintet consisting of Lisa Page Brooks, Tina Brooks, Yolanda Harris, Diane Campbell, and Marvie Wright. ''Witness'' is a 2020 non-fiction book by investigative journalist Louise Milligan. The book explores the ways in which victims of crime, particularly victims of sexual assault and child sexual abuse, are mistreated by the legal system when appearing as witnesses in court. The book was inspired by Milligan's own experience testifying in the trial of George Pell, an Australian cardinal accused of sexual abuse. Milligan later said in interviews that being cross-examined in Pell's trial was like being "hit by a truck" and that Pell's lawyer Robert Richter had consistently addressed her in a "sneering, sarcastic, bullying" tone.
