The Window (song Cycle)
''The Window; or, The Songs of the Wrens'' is a song cycle by Arthur Sullivan with words by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Written in 1867–70, it was eventually published in 1871. There are multiple versions of the title: On the cover of the 1871 edition, the subtitle is given as "The Loves of the Wrens", however, "Songs of the Wrens" is used on the frontispiece and is the one generally used. Background George Grove, the secretary of The Crystal Palace, originally suggested a collaboration between Tennyson and Sullivan on a German-style song cycle, in English, but similar to Schubert's ''Die Schöne Müllerin''. Grove was a friend of Sullivan's and an early promoter of his music. An English-language narrative song cycle, like Schubert's, was a novelty. John Everett Millais agreed to illustrate the poems for a handsome publication. On October 17, 1866, Grove and Sullivan dined with Tennyson at his home on the Isle of Wight, where they began to discuss the piece. By February 1867, ...

The Window (Cécile McLorin Salvant Album)
''The Window'' is a studio album by American jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. She is accompanied by pianist Sullivan Fortner. The album was released on by Mack Avenue label, her fourth release for the label. Critical reception Hank Shteamer of ''Rolling Stone'' wrote, "The most radical thing a jazz singer could do in 2018 is stick to the basics. One might expect Cécile McLorin Salvant, who picked up Best Jazz Vocal Album Grammys for each of her past two albums and is riding a wave of mainstream acclaim, to team with a buzzy producer or attempt some other kind of savvy crossover. But on The Window, the wise, virtuosic and subtly subversive 29-year-old singer opts for a setting so stark it can almost seem abstract..." A ''Pitchfork'' review by Stephen M. Deusner noted, "Among Salvant’s most distinguishing artistic traits is how she makes those tonal shifts not just exciting but meaningful. Her craft is undeniable, but built into her craft is the freshness of encounteri ...

Preceded by two surprise hit singles, the album reached No. 60 in the UK Albums Chart. Background Following the unexpected success of the group's 1979 singles—covers of " Summertime Blues" and " Money"— David Cunningham and Deborah Evans were offered a deal with Virgin Records. New material for the album featured improvisational musicians Steve Beresford and David Toop. The album encompasses " dub-style audio experiments" and "bent interpretations of pop music constructs." Critic Simon Reynolds called it "an exercise in pop absurdism" which included "a Brecht- Weill cover, Sanskrit chants, found sounds, and unlikely instrumental textures" alongside "Cunningham's penchant for excessive studio processing and daft effects." Charts Track list 1979 release All tracks by David Cunningham except as noted # "Der Song von Mandelay" (titled "Mandelay Song" on ...
