''The Vision of Saint Bernard'' (or ''The Virgin Appearing to Saint Bernard'') is a painting by the Italian artist Pietro Perugino, the main painter of the Umbrian school which was based in Perugia. The panel was executed as an altarpiece for the church of Santa Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi in Florence.Walther & Suckale, p. 111. It was later acquired in 1829/30 for King Ludwig I of Bavaria from the Capponi in Florence, and eventually made it to the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. The work has been called "one of the high points of European painting in the late 15th century". The painting shows Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, deep in his studies, being interrupted by a fully corporeal vision of the Virgin Mary, who appears to him in the clear light of day. Pietro Perugino
Pietro Perugino ( ; ; born Pietro Vannucci or Pietro Vanucci; – 1523), an Italian Renaissance painter of the Umbrian school, developed some of the qualities that found classic expression in the High Renaissance. Raphael became his most famous pupil. Early years Pietro Vannucci was born in Città della Pieve, Umbria, the son of Cristoforo Maria Vannucci. His nickname characterizes him as from Perugia, the chief city of Umbria. Scholars continue to dispute the socioeconomic status of the Vannucci family. While certain academics maintain that Vannucci worked his way out of poverty, others argue that his family was among the wealthiest in the town. His exact date of birth is not known, but based on his age at death that was mentioned by Vasari and Giovanni Santi, it is believed that he was born between 1446 and 1452. Robert Suckale
Robert Suckale (30 October 1943 – 13 February 2020) was a German art historian, medievalist and professor at Technische Universität Berlin. Life Suckale was born in Königsberg. Suckale completed his studies in art history with the subsidiary subjects classical archaeology and Latin philology of the Middle Ages in Berlin, Bonn, Paris and Munich in 1970 with a doctorate under at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He then worked at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich and from 1971 was a research assistant to Braunfels at the Institut für Kunstgeschichte dof the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. In 1976, he was awarded a doctorate with a thesis on the manuscripts from the years 1414/1415 Habilitated. In 1980, he was appointed to the chair of art history at the University of Bamberg. Cecil Hilton Monk Gould (24 May 1918 – 7 April 1994) was a British art historian and curator who specialised in Renaissance painting. He was a former Keeper and deputy director of the National Gallery in London. Life Born in London in 1918, Gould was the son of Admiralty Lieutenant-Commander Rupert Gould, the restorer of John Harrison's chronometers and well-known panellist of the BBC's "Brains Trust" programme during WWII, and Muriel Estall. Bernard of Clairvaux, O.Cist. (; 109020 August 1153), venerated as Saint Bernard, was an abbot, mystic, co-founder of the Knights Templar, and a major leader in the reform of the Benedictines through the nascent Cistercian Order. Bernard was sent to found Clairvaux Abbey only a few years after becoming a monk at Cîteaux. In the year 1128, Bernard attended the Council of Troyes, at which he traced the outlines of the Rule of the Knights Templar, which soon became an ideal of Christian nobility. On the death of Pope Honorius II in 1130, a schism arose in the church. Bernard was a major proponent of Pope Innocent II, arguing effectively for his legitimacy over the Antipope Anacletus II.
