Catatonia (band)
Catatonia were an alternative rock band from Wales who gained popularity in the mid-to-late 1990s. The band formed in 1992 after Mark Roberts met Cerys Matthews. The first major lineup featured Dafydd Ieuan of Super Furry Animals on drums, Paul Jones on bass, and Clancy Pegg on keyboards. With this line-up the band recorded two EPs, '' For Tinkerbell'' and ''Hooked''. Pegg was fired prior to work on their first studio album, '' Way Beyond Blue'', and during the recording of the album the band was joined by drummer Aled Richards, replacing Ieuan, who left to focus full-time on Super Furry Animals. During the live promotional appearances for the album the band was joined by guitarist Owen Powell. This latest incarnation of the band lasted until its dissolution in 2001. The single " You've Got a Lot to Answer For" received radio airplay and became the band's first top 40 single in the UK Singles Chart in September 1996. Their breakout success came at the start of 1998 with ...

Street, eds, ''iarchive:cambridgecompani00frit, The Cambridge Companion to Pop and Rock'' (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press), , pp. 95–105. During the 1950s and 1960s, pop music encompassed rock and roll and the youth-oriented styles it influenced. ''Rock music, Rock'' and ''pop'' music remained roughly synonymous until the late 1960s, after which ''pop'' became associated with music that was more commercial, wikt:ephemeral, ephemeral, and accessible. Identifying factors of pop music usually include repeated choruses and Hook (music), hooks, short to medium-length songs written in a basic format (often the verse–chorus form, verse–chorus structure), and rhythms or tempos that can be easily danced to. Much of pop music also borrows elements from other styles such as rock, hip hop, urban contemporary, ...

It has its roots in rock and roll, a style that drew from the black musical genres of blues and rhythm and blues, as well as from country music. Rock also drew strongly from genres such as electric blues and folk music, folk, and incorporated influences from jazz and other styles. Rock is typically centered on the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass guitar, drum kit, drums, and one or more singers. Way Beyond Blue
''Way Beyond Blue'' is the debut album by the Welsh band Catatonia. It has been seen by many fans as being something of a compilation album, as all but five songs on the album had appeared on one of the band's early EPs or singles, albeit in different renditions (see below). It spawned the band's first top 40 hit, "You've Got a Lot to Answer For", which hit No. 35. Critical reception In ''Melody Maker'', David Bennun highlighted Catatonia's sense of "dreaminess" on ''Way Beyond Blue'' and compared listening to the album to "swimming in your own thoughts, cotton wool and clouds studded with hidden pins." ''The Guardian''s Caroline Sullivan concluded that "' Lost Cat' and ' Sweet Catatonia', creamy janglefests both, are among the best things to have emerged from the nascent Welsh scene." AllMusic reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine later called ''Way Beyond Blue'' "an infectious set of jangle pop, injected with the punkish attitude of indie rock", adding that "the guitars ring as if ...

Mark Roberts (singer)
Mark Roberts (born 3 November 1967) is a Welsh rock musician, first known as a founding member of Y Cyrff. He then met Cerys Matthews and formed Catatonia along with Paul Jones. Career Roberts claimed for a number of years that he had stumbled across Matthews busking in Cardiff and offered her a guitar string she was missing, which led to their collaboration. The two had actually met busking, and were roommates by the time they formed the band. The string story was later revealed to be a fabrication by the band's publicist. Their split ended their songwriting partnership, and subsequently Roberts was responsible for much of the band's lyrical output. In Catatonia, Roberts shared main songwriting duties with Matthews, whilst also playing guitar and providing backing vocals. After Catatonia split, Roberts worked as a record producer before co-founding Welsh rock band Sherbet Antlers with former Catatonia bass player Paul Jones, together with John Griffiths and Kevs Ford from th ...
