The Snowman (picture Book)
''The Snowman'' is a wordless children's picture book by British author Raymond Briggs, first published in 1978 by Hamish Hamilton in the United Kingdom, and published by Random House in the United States in November of the same year. The book won a number of awards and was adapted into an animated television film in 1982 which is an annual fixture at Christmas. The book is entirely wordless, and illustrated with only coloured pencils. Briggs said that it was partly inspired by his previous book '' Fungus the Bogeyman'': "For two years I worked on ''Fungus'', buried amongst muck, slime and words, so... I wanted to do something which was clean, pleasant, fresh and wordless and quick." Plot One snowy winter's day, a boy builds a snowman who comes to life at the stroke of midnight. Raymond Briggs
Raymond Redvers Briggs (18 January 1934 – 9 August 2022) was an English illustrator, cartoonist, graphic novelist and author. Achieving critical and popular success among adults and children, he is best known in Britain for his 1978 story '' The Snowman'', a book without words whose cartoon adaptation is televised and whose musical adaptation is staged every Christmas. Briggs won the 1966 and 1973 Kate Greenaway Medals from the British Library Association, recognising the year's best children's book illustration by a British subject. For the 50th anniversary of the Medal (1955–2005), a panel named '' Father Christmas'' (1973) one of the top-ten winning works, which composed the ballot for a public election of the nation's favourite. ''The Snowman and the Snowdog'' is a 2012 British animated short film. It is the sequel to ''The Snowman'', and was created to mark the 30th anniversary of the original short film. ''The Snowman and the Snowdog'' is dedicated to John Coates (the film's producer, who died in September 2012) and features a new song called "Light the Night" by Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows.
