The Shops on Steeles and 404 is a small 50-store community mall at the corner of Steeles Avenue East and Don Mills Road in Markham, Ontario. Aside from a few chains, the mall is mostly independent stores. History The Shops on Steeles and 404 originally opened in 1977 as Markham Place (proposed as Markham Marketplace), and was owned by Cadillac Fairview. The mall named changed to The Shops on Steeles and 404 following the sale of the mall from Cadillac Fairview. In recent years, Wycliffe Property Management operated the mall until 2023 where it was sold. Original tenants included McDonald's, Subway, Miracle Mart, and the now defunct Sears Canada which used to be a major anchor. Steeles Avenue is an east–west street that stretches across the western and central Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada. Running from Appleby Line in Milton in the west to the Scarborough-Pickering Townline in the east, where it continues east into Durham Region as Taunton Road, which itself extends across the length of Durham Region to its boundary with Northumberland County. It is most notable for being the north city limit of Toronto where it borders the southern limit of York Region along its eastern half. York Region refers to Steeles Avenue as York Regional Road 95 but this use is only internal and there are no signs posted; as the street borders and is maintained by the City of Toronto. York Region Transit (YRT) is the public transit operator in York Region, Ontario, Canada. Its headquarters are in Richmond Hill, at 50 High Tech Road. YRT operates 65 full-time rush hour and limited routes, 35 school services, and six Viva bus rapid transit routes. History Food Basics was created by A&P Canada to compete with the successful No Frills warehouse-style supermarket operated by Loblaw Companies. It became part of the Metro group when A&P Canada was sold to Metro for $1.7 billion in 2005.
