''The Red and the Black'' () is a 1954 French-Italian historical drama film directed by Claude Autant-Lara, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jean Aurenche and Pierre Bost, based on the novel ''The Red and the Black'' by Stendhal. The film starred Gérard Philipe, Antonella Lualdi and Danielle Darrieux, and won the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics award for the best film of 1955 and the Grand Prix de l'Académie du Cinéma the same year. It was shot the Saint-Maurice Studios in Paris. The film's sets were designed by the art director Max Douy. Shown in various versions, the film's length is generally given as 113 minutes. In Canada it was 171 minutes; a longer version in France was 185 minutes（or 194 minutes in 2 parts); and at its New York opening it was 137 minutes. Claude Autant-Lara
Claude Autant-Lara (; 5 August 1901 – 5 February 2000) was a French film director, screenwriter, set designer and costume designer who worked in films for over 50 years. He made films characterised by bourgeois Realism (arts), realism, anti-clericalism and sexual frankness, often from literary sources. His career was frequently marked by controversy. Even though he was considered left-wing during most of his life, in his late 80s he was elected to the European Parliament as a member for the far-right National Rally, National Front: he stepped down two months later after making antisemitism, antisemitic statements. Alexandre Rignault (14 February 1901 – 2 April 1985) was a French actor. He appeared in more than a hundred films between 1931 and 1985. Biography He was born on February 14, 1901 in Paris 5th, at his parents' home, rue Guy-de-La-Brosse. His father was a mechanic, and his mother was a housewife. In the mid-1920s, after having worked in various professions, he desired to become an actor. Attracted to the theater, he wrote to Louis Jouvet to offer his services. Mirko Ellis (4 September 1923 – 11 September 2014) was a Swiss-Italian film, stage and television actor. Born Mirko Korcinsky in Locarno to a family of Lithuanian origin, Ellis moved, after his studies, to Italy, where he made his film debut in 1946, in a critically acclaimed role in Aldo Vergano's neorealist drama '' The Sun Still Rises''. One year later, he debuted on stage in the theatrical company of Maria Melato. He later alternated important roles and character roles, in genre films and television productions. Ellis was married to fellow actress Esther Maring, with whom he lived in Alghero, Sardinia. On 11 September 2014, Ellis fell from the balcony of his fourth-floor apartment and died.
