The Radio One Sessions (Stiff Little Fingers Album)
Stiff Little Fingers are a Northern Irish punk rock band from Belfast. They formed in 1977 at the height of the Troubles, which informed much of their songwriting. They started out as a schoolboy band called Highway Star (named after the Deep Purple song), doing rock covers, until they discovered punk. They were the first punk band in Belfast to release a record – the " Suspect Device" single came out on their own independent label, Rigid Digits. Their album '' Inflammable Material'', released in partnership with Rough Trade, became the first independent LP to enter the UK top 20. After six years and four albums, they split up. They re-formed five years later, in 1987. Despite major personnel changes, they are still touring and recording. Ali McMordie
Alistair Jardine "Ali" McMordie (born 31 March 1959 in Belfast, Northern Ireland) is a bass guitarist, best known as a founding member of Stiff Little Fingers, playing with the band from 1977 until they broke up in 1983, and joined them on the first few years of reunion tours five years later. After Stiff Little Fingers disbanded in 1983, McMordie joined a group of Reading musicians in the newly formed dance-punk band, Friction Groove. They secured a deal with Warner label, Atlantic Records, Atlantic, and went on to record an album - ''The Black Box'' - in Berlin and Brussels, from which the first single ("Time Bomb") charted very briefly. Around 1986 he provided, along with other Friction Groove members, the core band behind Sinéad O'Connor, who had just arrived in London from Dublin. Ali was later sacked. Dan Donnelly (singer-songwriter)
Dan Donnelly is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter and a member of the Levellers since 2022. Career Growing up in Belfast, Donnelly played in a number of local bands, finding success in Ireland with Watercress, a four-piece acoustic folk-rock band for whom he played guitar, mandolin, percussion and "plumbing" (a home-made didgeridoo). They released six EPs between 1995 and 1998, when they released their one album, ''Bummer'', all on their own local label, Creeping Herb. The Donnelly-penned ''Candlemaker'' reached the No.1 position on the Irish Indie Chart. Watercress played their final concert at the Empire Music Hall in Belfast on 23 December 2000 and disbanded in early 2001. After Watercress disbanded, Donnelly moved to New York to pursue a solo career. Suspect Device (song)
"Suspect Device" is the debut single by Northern Irish punk band Stiff Little Fingers, released on 17 March 1978. Background and release Stiff Little Fingers – Jake Burns, vocals and guitar, Henry Cluney, guitar, Ali McMordie, bass, and Brian Faloon, drums – made their first public appearance as a punk band on 16 August 1977. Their fourth gig was at the Glenmachen Stables, Belfast on 14 November 1977. At this gig, the band met journalists Gordon Ogilivie and Colin McClelland, who would soon become the group's management team. Ogilivie showed Burns draft lyrics for a possible song. Highway Star (song)
"Highway Star" is a song by the English rock band Deep Purple. It is the opening track on the band's sixth studio album ''Machine Head'' (1972) and is the fastest tempo song on the album. It is characterised by long, classically inspired guitar and organ solos. History This song was born on a tour bus going to Portsmouth in 1971 when a reporter asked the band how they wrote songs. To demonstrate, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore grabbed an acoustic guitar and began playing a riff consisting of a single "G" repeated over and over, while vocalist Ian Gillan improvised lyrics over the top. The song was refined and was performed that same night. The song first appeared on the 1972 LP ''Machine Head'' and remained one of the band's live concert staples, being the set opener even before it was released on any album. Deep Purple
Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in London in 1968. The Troubles
The Troubles () were an ethno-nationalist conflict in Northern Ireland that lasted for about 30 years from the late 1960s to 1998. Punk Rock
Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a rock music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. Rooted in 1950s rock and roll and 1960s garage rock, punk bands rejected the corporate nature of mainstream 1970s rock music. Bruce Foxton
Bruce Douglas Foxton (born 1 September 1955) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. Foxton's music career spans more than 40 years. He came to prominence in the late 1970s as bassist and backing vocalist of mod revival band the Jam. He occasionally performed the lead vocals, such as on the songs "Carnaby Street", " News of the World", " David Watts" and " Smithers-Jones". After the band's break-up, he pursued a brief solo career releasing one studio album, '' Touch Sensitive'', in 1984. The album's single " Freak" became a UK Top 20 hit in 1983. He played in several bands, including Sharp with former Jam member Rick Buckler, before joining Stiff Little Fingers in 1990. Dolphin Taylor
Brian "Dolph" Taylor (born 10 November 1958) is a British former drummer. Career Tom Robinson Band Taylor's first band was Dragon's Playground, which earlier had had Annie Lennox as a vocalist. In 1976 Dragon's Playground appeared on ATV's ''New Faces''. His career with the Tom Robinson Band started when Taylor gave a friend a lift to an audition as bass guitarist for the Tom Robinson Band in 1976. As the band had no drummer at that point, Taylor (who was already a drummer) filled in. By the end of the evening, the band was still looking for a bass guitarist, but had found their drummer. Jim Reilly
James G. Reilly (born 9 May 1957) is the second drummer for the Northern Ireland based punk band Stiff Little Fingers, with whom he played from 1979 to 1981. He played on the LPs '' Nobody's Heroes'', '' Go for It'' and ''Hanx''. In 1981, he moved to the United States, where he played in two bands, Red Rockers, followed by The Raindogs. In the late 1980s, he lived in Boston and worked as a band manager. Brian Faloon
Brian Faloon is a musician born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He played drums for Highway Star, who were to become Stiff Little Fingers, having met two of the other band members at Belfast Boys' Model School. Faloon stayed with SLF long enough to record their first album '' Inflammable Material'' but decided the rock 'n' roll lifestyle wasn't for him, so left the band, inspiring the words to SLF's single "Wait and See". In the nineties, Faloon occasionally performed as a guest drummer with the SLF tribute band Hanx who went on to become minor Punk band 'The Red Eyes'. As of 2009, he is back in Northern Ireland where he presents a weekly show on local radio. Henry Cluney
Henry Cluney (born 4 August 1957) is a guitarist and former member of the band Stiff Little Fingers. He remained with the group until lead singer Jake Burns disbanded them in 1983. He toured briefly with the band Dark Lady supporting Jake Burns and the Big Wheel, notably at the Marquee Club in Wardour Street but then spent five years back in Belfast teaching guitar until Stiff Little Fingers was reformed. He was a regular songwriting contributor for the group's first four albums, taking over lead vocal duties on his own compositions. He left the group amid some acrimony in 1993. He moved to Rochester, Minnesota in 1997, keeping up his involvement in music, playing guitar with several regional rock bands.
