Sonya Levien
Sonya Levien (born Sara Opesken; 25 December 1888 – 19 March 1960) was a Russian-born American screenwriter. She became one of the highest earning female screenwriters in Hollywood in the 1930s and would help a number of directors and film stars transition from silent films to talkies. In 1955 she received an Academy Award for her screenplay '' Interrupted Melody.'' Early life Sara Opesken (Sonya being the Russian diminutive) was born in Panimunik, a small village, now part of Kaunas, Lithuania, in the Pale of Settlement on 25 December 1888 (later changing the date to 1898.) The oldest child to parents Julius (b. ca. 1863) and Fanny (b.ca. 1865), Sonya had two brothers, Arnold and Max. During this period, Russian authorities kept a watchful eye over citizens, especially Jewish people with radical affiliations. Charles Crockett
Charles Crockett (December 29, 1870 – June 12, 1934) was an American character actor known for his roles in films such as '' Guilty Hands'', '' The Gingham Girl'', and '' The Princess from Hoboken''. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on December 29, 1870, Crockett appeared in stage productions before becoming a film actor. During his career, he acted in four Western films, two comedy films, and two historical films. Calling him "a well-known character actor", ''The Cincinnati Post'' said, "In addition to being an actor of repute, Crockett is known in studioland as 'Hollywood's Will Rogers', so famous have his many humorous after-dinner speeches become in every quarter of the studio city." Rotten Tomatoes said he "had a successful Hollywood career". Boris Karloff (1887–1969) was an English actor. He became known for his role as Frankenstein's monster in the 1931 ''Frankenstein'' (his 82nd film), leading to a long career in film, radio, and television. Born William Henry Pratt in England,Mank, p. 343 he emigrated to Canada in 1909 as a young man and eventually joined a Canadian touring company, adopting the stage name Boris Karloff. By 1919, Karloff moved to Hollywood where he found regular work as an extra at Universal Studios. Although he appeared in numerous silent films, Karloff's first significant roles were in Howard Hawks's ''The Criminal Code'' (1931) and Mervyn LeRoy's '' Five Star Final'' (1931).
