''The Plains of Passage'' is an historical fiction novel by Jean M. Auel published in 1990. It is the sequel to '' The Mammoth Hunters'' and fourth in the Earth's Children series. Plot ''The Plains of Passage'' describes the journey of Ayla and Jondalar west along the Great Mother River (the Danube), from the home of The Mammoth Hunters (roughly modern Ukraine) to Jondalar's homeland (close to Les Eyzies, Dordogne, France). During this journey, Ayla meets the various peoples who live along their line of march. These meetings, the attitudes and beliefs of these groups, and Ayla's response form an essential part of the story. Ayla (Earth's Children)
Ayla is the main character of Jean Auel's '' Earth's Children'' novels, a series which started in 1980. She is a woman of unknown origins, simply referred to as one of 'the Others', though possibly a Cro-Magnon woman who was raised by Neanderthals. Her blonde hair and light blue-grey eyes, which would be a much later evolution in the homo-sapien species, suggests that she comes from a hitherto unknown species, and that her son was possibly the first Homo-Sapien (and thus Cro-Magnon). Ayla was played by Daryl Hannah as the older version and by Nicole Eggert as the younger version in the 1986 film ''The Clan of the Cave Bear''. Jondalar
Jondalar of the Zelandonii is the male main character of Jean Auel's '' Earth's Children'' speculative historical fiction series set in the Late Stone Age of Europe. He has long pale blond hair which he usually pulls back in a ponytail (called a "club" by his people), vivid blue eyes, is six feet six inches tall, and is described as extremely handsome and skillful in many ways. Introduced early in the second novel of the series as a "co-star" of the book '' The Valley of Horses'', he and his brother Thonolan are on a long Journey to see the end of the Great Mother River.
