The People's Recorder
''The People's Recorder'' is a podcast about the Federal Writers' Project, and the ways that the American Guide Series reflects the modern day United States. The podcast is produced by Spark Media and is hosted by author and historian Chris Haley. About Inspired by the award-winning documentary, '' Soul of a People'', the podcast explores the work of the Federal Writers' Project, a United States government agency within the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. The project hired out of work writers with the goal of publishing a series of travel guides. The first season of ''The People's Recorder'' includes ten episodes. The podcast was produced with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the state humanities councils of Florida, Virginia, Wisconsin, California, and Nebraska. Andrea Kalin
Andrea Kalin is an American independent filmmaker, writer, producer, and director. She is also the principal and founder of Spark Media and founder and executive director of Stone Soup Productions, a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation. Personal life Kalin was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She attended Brookline High School in Brookline, Massachusetts and graduated from American University with a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice and corrections. Kalin lives and works in Washington, D.C. and is the founder and owner of Spark Media a documentary production company. Filmmaking Andrea Kalin is a documentary filmmaker who focuses on social, mental health and women's health issues. She uses storytelling and marketing strategies to promote social change and raise awareness to societal problems, such as woman's health issues and suicide. Great Depression
The Great Depression was a severe global economic downturn from 1929 to 1939. The period was characterized by high rates of unemployment and poverty, drastic reductions in industrial production and international trade, and widespread bank and business failures around the world. The economic contagion began in 1929 in the United States, the largest economy in the world, with the devastating Wall Street stock market crash of October 1929 often considered the beginning of the Depression. The Ambies (or the Awards for Excellence in Audio) are awards for artistic and technical merit in the podcast industry. They are awarded by The Podcast Academy in two overall categories: Show Recognition and Talent Recognition. Works Progress Administration
The Works Progress Administration (WPA; from 1935 to 1939, then known as the Work Projects Administration from 1939 to 1943) was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers (mostly men who were not formally educated) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. It was set up on May 6, 1935, by presidential order, as a key part of the Second New Deal. The WPA's first appropriation in 1935 was $4.9 billion (about $15 per person in the U.S., around 6.7 percent of the 1935 GDP).
