''The Other Side of Desire'' is the thirteenth studio album by American singer-songwriter Rickie Lee Jones. It was released on June 23, 2015, under Jones's own label The Other Side of Desire with distribution handled by Thirty Tigers. ''The Other Side of Desire'' is Jones' first album of original material since ''Balm in Gilead'' (2009) and it received positive acclaim from music critics. Background Jones began writing for the album when she moved back to New Orleans about two years prior and after on-and-off periods of writer's block. The album was recorded at the Music Shed studio in New Orleans with John Porter helming production duties. The album title is also a nod to New Orleans' Desire Street in the Bywater neighborhood. Rickie Lee Jones (born November 8, 1954) is an American singer, musician, and songwriter. Over the course of a career that spans five decades and 15 studio albums, she has recorded in various musical styles including rock, R&B, pop, soul, and jazz. Thirty Tigers is an American music marketing, distribution and management company for independent artists, based in Nashville. History The company was founded in 2002 by David Macias and Deb Markland and is distributed by The Orchard. ''Balm in Gilead'' is a 1965 American play written by American playwright Lanford Wilson. Dramatic structure Wilson's first full-length play, ''Balm in Gilead'' centers on a café frequented by heroin addicts, prostitutes, and thieves. It features many unconventional theatrical devices, such as overlapping dialogue, simultaneous scenes, and unsympathetic lead characters.
