The Music Gallery
The Music Gallery is an independent performance venue in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is known as a space for musical and interdisciplinary projects in experimental genres. The Music Gallery is publicly funded through arts grants from the city, province, and country, and through membership and ticket sales. History The Music Gallery was founded in 1976, by members of the improvisational experimental group CCMC. The musicians ran the space and performed there regularly until 2000. CCMC artists also established the ''Music Gallery Editions'' record label and '' Musicworks''. The Music Gallery's motto is "Toronto's Centre for Creative Music." John Oswald, in an editorial describing the founding of ''Musicworks'', described it as "an experimental music performance facility." CCMC (band)
CCMC is a Canadian free improvisation group founded in 1974. History The CCMC was founded by Peter Anson, Graham Coughtry, Larry Dubin, Greg Gallagher, Nobuo Kubota, Allan Mattes, Casey Sokol, Bill Smith and Michael Snow. Three of the founding members (Graham Coughtry, Nobuo Kubota, and Michael Snow) were members of Artists' Jazz Band, a seminal Toronto free-jazz ensemble. In 1976, the group founded The Music Gallery as an artist-run centre where they performed twice-weekly. The group was formally associated with The Music Gallery until 2000. Members of the group were also founders of the Music Gallery Editions record label, which issued CCMC's first six albums. The group remains active to the present day, though through its various incarnations Michael Snow has been the group's only constant member. Jennifer Castle is a Canadian singer-songwriter, based in Toronto, Ontario. Larry Lake (musician)
Larry Ellsworth Lake (2 July 1943 – 17 September 2013) was an American–born Canadian composer, trumpeter, freelance writer on music, radio broadcaster, and record producer. As a composer he was primarily known for his electronic music. His musical compositions are characterized by their integration of acoustic instruments with electronic ones in live performance. From 1985 until his death he served as artistic director of the Canadian Electronic Ensemble, a group of which he was a founding member. For nearly 30 years he hosted and served as music consultant for the CBC Radio program '' Two New Hours''. An associate of the Canadian Music Centre (CMC), he was the chair of the CMC's Ontario Region Council and was an executive member of the CMC's national board. David Rosenboom
David Rosenboom (born 1947 in Fairfield, Iowa) is a composer, performer, interdisciplinary artist, author, and educator known for his work in American experimental music. Rosenboom has explored various forms of music, languages for improvisation, new techniques in scoring for ensembles, multi-disciplinary composition and performance, cross-cultural collaborations, performance art and literature, interactive multi-media, new instrument technologies, generative algorithmic systems, art-science research and philosophy, and extended musical interface with the human nervous system. He is a pioneer in the use of neurofeedback and compositional algorithms. Michael Snow
Michael James Aleck Snow (December 10, 1928 – January 5, 2023) was a Canadian artist who worked in a range of media including film, installation, sculpture, photography, and music. His best-known films are ''Wavelength'' (1967) and '' La Région Centrale'' (1971), with the former regarded as a milestone in avant-garde cinema. Life Michael James Aleck Snow was born in Toronto on December 10, 1928. He studied at Upper Canada College and the Ontario College of Art. He had his first solo exhibition in 1957. Nobuo Kubota
Nobuo Kubota (born 1932) is a Canadian multimedia artist. Life Kubota grew up with a strong Japanese focus in his home and with an early interest in the writings by Jack Kerouac and D. T. Suzuki. These two factors partially explain his later attraction to Zen Buddhism. During World War II, he was incarcerated with his family in an internment camp for Japanese Canadians. Kubota has a degree in architecture from the University of Toronto and practiced architecture for ten years. As an architect, his interest in Zen Buddhism was reinforced by an attraction to Japanese architecture, which was to have an influence on him later as a sculptor. He became a sculptor in 1969, showed regularly with the Isaacs Gallery group in Toronto, and is said to have deliberately adopted a Japanese 'look' in his work whereby he alludes to Japanese aesthetics and art. Isla Craig
Isla Craig is a Canadian vocalist and songwriter based in Toronto, Ontario. Growing up Craig was influenced by choral performances at her church and by her mother who sings and plays the organ and piano. Craig frequently collaborates with and sings backup vocals for other performers, including Jennifer Castle and Meg Remy. Craig sang on The Cosmic Range's debut ''New Latitudes'' (2016). She is a former Bruce Peninsula vocalist. She was also a member of the duo OG Melody with Thom Gill. Teebs
Mtendere Mandowa, better known by his stage name Teebs, is an American record producer and visual artist from Los Angeles, California. He is a member of the My Hollow Drum collective. He is also one half of the duo Sons of the Morning. Life and career Born in The Bronx, Mandowa was raised by parents from Malawi and Barbados. Teebs released his first album, ''Ardour (album), Ardour'', on Brainfeeder in 2010. ''LA Weekly'' called it "one of the most delicate and lovely albums of the year". James Scott Tamborello, (born 1975) also known by his stage name Dntel , is an American electronic music artist and DJ. Aside from his main solo project, Tamborello is also known as a member of the groups The Postal Service, Headset, Strictly Ballroom, and Figurine, where he is sometimes cited as James Figurine. Devendra Obi Banhart (born May 30, 1981) is an American singer-songwriter and visual artist. Banhart was born in Texas and raised in Venezuela and California.
