Maurice Elvey
Maurice Elvey (11 November 1887 – 28 August 1967) was one of the most prolific film directors in British history. He directed nearly 200 films between 1913 and 1957. During the silent film era he directed as many as twenty films per year. He also produced more than fifty films – his own as well as films directed by others. Biography Born William Seward Folkard in Stockton-on-Tees, he ran away from home at the age of nine, seeking his fortune in London. There he worked variously as a kitchen hand and hotel pageboy, before ending up as stagehand and actor at the age of 17. He quickly rose to directing and producing plays and established his own theatrical company before switching to films with ''The Great Gold Robbery'' in 1913. Paulette Del Baye
Paulette del Baye (1877 – 23 May 1945), born Catalina Francisca Paulina Batalla, was a French actress, singer, dancer and vaudeville performer from Cuba. Career Paulette del Baye performed as "La commère au bois" in the revue at the Moulin Rouge in 1904. "Paulette del Baye est une comédienne fine, une chanteuse spirituelle, une danseuse exquise, qui fait de véritables tours de force d'art en souriant," said one report about the revue. "The Man with the Twisted Lip", one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the sixth of the twelve stories in '' The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes''. The story was first published in the ''Strand Magazine'' in December 1891. Doyle ranked "The Man with the Twisted Lip" sixteenth in a list of his nineteen favourite Sherlock Holmes stories. Plot The story begins when a friend of Dr. Watson's wife comes to Watson's house, frantic because her husband, Isa Whitney, an opium addict, has gone missing. Watson helps her pull him out of the opium den and sends him home. Watson is surprised to find that Sherlock Holmes is there too, in disguise and trying to get information to solve a different case about a man who has disappeared.
